Shock over landlord's list of demands to tenant: 'Doesn't seem right'
A landlord has left a detailed list of demands for a tenant that seem to go way beyond general rental requirements.
The shocked parent of the tenant has shared a copy of the list on Reddit's 'Apartment Living' thread.
"Has anyone received a landlord note like this?" they asked.

"Landlord left a copy attached to every door in my son's complex. I couldn't believe it when I saw it!
"Are all of those requirements legal?"

They said while they could "understand if it was listed in a lease that was signed" to "come up with a handwritten list of requirements doesn't seem right."
The note is made up of six demands, the first of which is to "replace broken blinds".

This is followed by removing "items from the porch" including "toys" or any "non-patio items."
The landlord has also asked the tenant to move furniture "2 feet" away from the windows.
"We must be able to get to your windows to open them," they said.
Next, the landlord demands the tenant get rid of all candles, writing "No candles allowed - Get rid of them!"

Next, they are told "No clutter in apartment" and to "Mop floors" and "Clean carpets" and "dirty doors" and "dirty windows" and "window sills."
"OVEN DIRTY - Clean it!" They then wrote, adding, "No storage in ovens."
"Porch and windows might be requirements from the town/city or fire marshals. Replacing blinds seems like something the landlord should do," one Redditer expained.
"Candles might be against the lease, they are in mine," they continued. The rest seem odd."
"Seems more like your chore list from mum," another said.

"I've never received a hand written note, that's extremely unprofessional," added another.
Another commented: "The replace broken blinds is definitely their problem. Moving the furniture away from the windows is odd. I can see all of the other things being a safety/fire hazard issue.
"The clutter thing could be their personal preference, or they could be super anal about fire safety, like if you have your crap laying all over the floor or in doorways, but seems like a stretch."
One Redditor didn't see a problem with the requests but suggested softer language should have been used.

"The letter is written poorly. I would never approve anything of the sort to go out without a total rewrite that softens the language and acknowledges the value of the residents living there Issues must be documented but that can be accomplished without destroying the relationship with the renter," they said.
"Is this landlord going in your apartment when you're not home? Looks like it from that letter, otherwise how do they know you have candles & clutter? I'd be putting a camera in there," another said.
