Simple DIY hack using a $2 Kmart buy is the perfect way to cool down this summer

Weather experts have warned we're in for a hot summer and with spring already producing some scorching days, we're on the look out for any hack that helps cool us down.

One mum has found the perfect budget solution for a water play activity the kids (and adults) will love, by turning a $2 pool noodle from Kmart into a sprinkler.

Gardeners and those passionate about having a lush lawn can also use the hack to water a larger area in one go.

Kayla showed how she made the sprinkler in a reel on her Instagram page @life_with_little_loves.

"Cut a section off the end and cut that section into pieces so you can stuff some in one end to block the hole," she explained in step-by-step details in the caption.

"Use a cable tie to tie off the end (use your muscles and make sure it's tight!). Use a screw driver or something else long and stabby to put holes along the top... Then push the hose in the end that's not blocked and put another cable tie around that end. Turn on the tap and let the kids free!"

If you're wondering why the pool noodle in the video starts off red and ends up yellow, that's because the primary teacher went through a bit of trial and error while making the DIY and passed on her advice so we don't make the same mistake.

Kayla warned not to put too many holes in the pool noodle or make it too long. This is because it will impact the water pressure that comes from the hose and means you won't get those large water shoots that make sprinklers so fun.

She added that another version of this hack she's seen on social media uses tape instead of cable ties, so that's an option if you don't have any cable ties at home.

And don't worry about your hose, the pool noodle can be easily slipped off when you're finished playing.

Kayla's followers loved the DIY and have bookmarked the post to make on a hot day.
