'All bodies deserve representation': Model makes powerful postpartum return to runway

Gabrielle Oehlmann

Last year, British model Iskra Lawrence walked the runway for a swimsuit campaign during Miami Swim Week while she was pregnant.

She instantly became the subject of a barrage of 'body-shaming' from "hundreds" of internet trolls who she called out on social media at the time.

Now, four months postpartum, she has made a statement return to the runway with a powerful message to boot.

Lawrence walked the runway with her baby daughter in her arms in what she described as "a once in a lifetime experience".

"I'll treasure these memories forever," she wrote on Instagram.

She shared a series of photos from the experience as she reflected on the criticism she received last year and her decision to return to modelling so soon after birth.

"After being body shamed whilst pregnant on the runway last year, I decided to return to the runway four months postpartum and celebrate the body they told me not to be ashamed of and cover up because all bodies deserve representation including postpartum ones," she wrote.

"I can't wait to share these pictures with her when she's older and tell stories of all our adventures."

She concluded her post with a message for mums everywhere.

"Life doesn't end when you become a mum and your dreams don't have to either."

For Lawrence that dream is modelling, something she has been overjoyed to share with her daughter for a second time now.

Last year, after Lawrence carried her unborn baby on the runway, her Instagram post wasn't as positive.

At the time, she shared a carousel of pictures from the runway show – and the comments she received – to highlight the trolling.

"Imagine body-shaming a stranger on the internet," a caption on the first image read.

Across the second image, she wrote: "That's 6 months pregnant walking in Miami Swim Week more proud of her body than ever after TTC (trying to conceive)."

Throughout the post she shared screenshots of the "hundreds" of negative comments she had received in the wake of the runway show.

Of all those comments she shared only two that were positive.

"I found two kind comments out of hundreds," she wrote.

In the caption of the post, Lawrence shared her "disbelief" for what she had witnessed.

"I'm still in disbelief that in 2024 (and with everything going on in the world) that fat shaming a pregnant woman seemed like the best use of your time?" she wrote.

Thankfully Lawrence was able to brush off the negative commentary and remains "proud" of her runway appearance with her baby girl in tow.

She also took a moment to address the trolls directly with a tongue-in-cheek comment about their "priorities".

"But I do want to thank these trolls for being so obsessed with me they made commenting on my big fat pregnant body their biggest priority," she wrote on the last slide of her carousel.

"She's here P.P. our daughter joined us at 3.56am here at home. 8 lbs 14 oz of preciousness, our hearts are exploding with gratitude," Lawrence said alongside a series of photos.

"Thank you my rock for being by my side @philipapayne can't believe we finally have our daughter and a sister for big brother," she continued.
