The most hacked Kmart buy of all time just got a stylish new look perfect for hiding a messy home essential

One Kmart product has arguably been transformed more than any other over the past few years and almost always into the same thing.

But during this time the $65 Kmart laundry hamper has had the same look with a Hamptons style white colour and panelled front and silver handles.

That is until now, with a second laundry hamper style available at Kmart for the same price giving customers another option for sorting clothes or, for those doing the hack, rubbish.

The Kmart laundry hamper seems more popular for sorting rubbish than laundry. Kmart

The Isla laundry hamper was released as part of the retailer's huge new home and living product drop in February.

It is even more stylish than the original laundry hamper with a timber colour, doors with slim panelling and sleek silver handles at the top of the doors.

This means that if the white laundry hamper isn't your style – regardless of whether you're using it for clothes or rubbish – you don't necessarily have to paint it or cover it in contact because this new look might just suit perfectly.

It also matches the many Isla furniture pieces Kmart has including a shoe cabinet and sideboard so you can have the entire entryway sorted with a consistent look.

"The laundry hamper cabinet is designed to blend seamlessly with modern interiors, offering both functionality and style at an everyday low price. With its neutral and sleek finish, it provides an affordable way to achieve a modern, organised home," Rosanne Merola, Kmart buyer, tells 9honey Living.

As for the hack, the Isla cabinet has the exact same dimensions as the original laundry hamper so the steps to transform the unit into a rubbish sorting station would be the same.

And it's as easy as removing the cloth bags from the two sections and swapping them with the 27L bin from Bunnings, which costs $14.98, or any other plastic bin that fits.

Then, regardless of whether you use the original laundry hamper or the Isla version, you have a stylish way to sort rubbish and recycling without it being an eyesore in the kitchen or by the front door.

All you need to do to take the recycling out is lift up the plastic bin and take it to the yellow bin outside.

For Tegan Jean, who shared her own experience with the laundry hamper hack in a TikTok, the cabinet has "made such a difference to this space".

"The bin area in our kitchen was looking terrible, I knew I had to tidy it up, and I'd seen that hack where you grab the Kmart laundry hamper and some 27L bins from Bunnings... put together the hamper, put the bins in instead of the inserts and I added some little gold handles and I think it looks so much better," she said in the video.

For inspiration to do your own laundry hamper hack you'll find countless examples across social media with people showing how they styled the top of the unit with plants and décor and updated the look with different handles and colours.

One woman has even transformed the laundry hampers into a coffee nook by adding shelves inside the cabinets.

And Kmart continues to be impressed by how this product has been hacked.

"It's fantastic to see how creatively our customers repurpose our products to fit their needs. The bin station hack shows that affordable, well-designed pieces can be both on-trend and multifunctional," Merola said.
