103-year-old runner dubbed 'Hurricane' wins gold in the 100-metre dash at US games

Julie 'Hurricane' Hawkins hasn't let age slow her down one bit.

The 103-year-old grandmother from Louisiana, US, not only attended the Senior Games but walked away with two gold medals.

The runner was the oldest competitor at the 2019 event in Albuquerque, New Mexico, took part in the 50m dash and the 100m dash.

And while Hawkins didn't break her own 2017 record in the 100m dash, she did top the table in both events.

Although, the mother-of-four had mixed feelings about her finish, telling Good Morning America: "I’m thrilled I did as well as I did but I didn’t do as well as I have done.

"I don’t know if it’s because I’m older, or maybe it was the atmosphere," she added.

When asked if she plans to compete again at the games next year, the centenarian replied pragmatically: "When you’re 103, every day is a miracle... I just keep getting up and I’m here again."

The grandmother-of-three and great-grandmother-of-three only took up running after she turned 100 — when mountain biking got a little difficult.

"At 100 I started running — I thought it would be neat to run at 100 and do the 100-yard dash," she told ABC News.
