Expert's tip prevents mould growth on handbags just by walking out the door

The last thing you want when you're about to head out is to grab the perfect matching handbag for your outfit from your wardrobe only to find mould on it.

But there is a very easy way to prevent the fungi from ruining your favourite bags and it costs nothing at all

Professional organiser Jacqueline Stein shared her tips to prevent mouldy handbags in an Instagram reel.

While most are standard steps for storing things in your wardrobe, her $0 tip is one you probably haven't thought of and can start doing next time you head out.

"Rotate & Use All Bags: By rotating and using your bags regularly, you'll air them out and prevent moisture buildup during long storage. Always store them in a dust cover to protect from dust and damage," she captioned the post.

That means preventing mould on your handbag is as simple as using them more often instead of always reaching for the same one.

Another tip Stein has is to get rid of the regular paper stuffing that is placed in handbags to help keep their shape because there is a much better option.

"Regular paper attracts moisture, which can lead to mold! Instead, use acid-free tissue paper for stuffing – it's moisture-resistant and protects your handbags," she said.

Stein's third tip is to invest in a dehumidifier to remove excess moisture from the air as humidity can lead to mould.

Other options for preventing mouldy handbags include moisture absorbing products, some of these can be hung on the wardrobe rail, cleaning bags and the area they're stored in regularly and leaving your wardrobe door open for a while during the day, this is even better if you also have a window open in the room.

As for what to do if mould has already broken out on your handbags, it is possible to clean it.

For leather handbags use a clean cloth to brush off the fungi – this is good to do outside so you don't spread or breathe in any spores that come off.

Then spot clean using a solution of water and vinegar and a damp cloth and allow to dry fully. Finish with leather conditioner if needed.
