Three dishwasher detergents topped CHOICE's 2024 review but only one beats the others on price

Three dishwasher detergents have tied for first place in CHOICE's 2024 dishwasher detergent review.

Aldi Logix platinum dishwasher capsules, Ecostore ultra power dishwasher tablets and Finish powerball ultimate all in one tabs baking soda all scored 76 per cent when tested.

There was one major difference between them all though and that's the price.

The Aldi dishwasher tablets cost just 26 cents a wash (or $11.99 for a pack of 46), compared to the Ecostore tablets at 64 cents a wash (or $23 for 36 tablets) and the Finish tabs for $1.26 a wash (or $43 for 34 tablets).

So based on the review, you could expect to get the same results as big name brands but at a lower price.

"This goes to show that if you shop smart, you can get a great clean while saving money," Matt Steen, CHOICE head of reviews and testing, said.

"A cheaper Aldi detergent – the Logix All in One tablets – scored 72 per cent, so they're another great option if you're on a tight budget. They cost just 14 cents per wash."

Seven dishwasher tablets came in at 75 per cent in the tests, including Fairy platinum plus 30 minute miracle dishwasher capsules fresh scent and Finish powerball quantum all in one tabs.

Forty-one dishwasher detergents were tested in the review this year. The cleaning products were tested against food stains like egg yolk, baked-on cheese and bolognaise sauce.

While dishwasher detergents are necessary, CHOICE advised that your dishwasher matters when it comes to results.

"If you have a good dishwasher, then you won't necessarily need to buy the best performing detergent – you can opt for a cheaper product instead, or one that aligns with your ethical or environmental priorities," Steen said.

If your dishes aren't coming out clean, you can try switching to another detergent but there might also be other issues at play.

These include a dirty dishwasher, which can be fixed by cleaning it, and stacking dishes in a way that prevents water from reaching the stains.
