The $7 Kmart art and craft buy that transformed my cluttered bathroom vanity

When you don't have a shaving cabinet or any shelves above the sink, storing skincare in the bathroom is a bit of a nightmare.

But I have found a simple solution to the problem in a surprising section of Kmart that perfectly fulfils my needs.

Before that I had tried storage unit after storage unit on the bathroom vanity in the left-hand corner, which has an awkwardly placed soap dish ring (without the actual soap dish) that limits the height of what I can put there.

This is a great way to store skincare, but it's hard to move for cleaning and is awkward with the soap dish ring. Rachael Gavin

The only storage I could ever use had to fit under that eyesore and meant all my skincare was sitting out creating visual clutter.

Then when I needed to clean the bathroom vanity or simply just wipe it at the end of the day as maintenance cleaning, it meant wiping around it or removing everything.

And because most of the items were sitting individually on top of a storage unit I couldn't just whisk them away quickly since they'd all fall everywhere.

What I needed was a solution that would allow me to quickly and easily put the items on the vanity and then remove them again without a hassle.

After seeing Kmart had a $7.50 clear plastic storage tote for skincare I headed to the store to get one thinking it might be the answer.

But knowing that the best storage solutions at Kmart are usually products that are designed for a different purpose I kept my eyes peeled just in case.

In the art and craft section I spotted another caddy that came in a pale pink colour and looked a little sturdier and larger but for the same price.

I took both options home and tried the clear plastic storage tote first since it was designed to hold makeup and skincare. Plus the moveable handle would need to be re-positioned to move the away.

It wasn't long before I realised it just wasn't going to fit the items I use in my skincare routine, so I gave the art and craft caddy a shot.

That proved to be a much better fit for everything and had an unmovable handle allowing me to get it out of the bathroom cupboard and onto the vanity in seconds.

Now the only things I have stored around my bathroom sink are a soap dispenser and toothbrush holder with toothbrushes and toothpaste.

Unlike skincare, which I use twice a day, the soap is used more often and while the toothbrushes and paste is also only used twice a day, toothbrushes actually need to be stored out so that it can fully air dry between uses to reduce bacterial growth.

But even though there are still a couple of things on the bathroom vanity, it is much easier to wipe down regularly and there's less to move for deeper cleans.

It also just looks so much calmer to the eye, which is want you want in the bathroom.

So next time you're looking for storage, consider trying the art and craft section or something not designed for what you need and you just might find the perfect solution to your storage dilemma.
