The four things you should always clean before guests arrive, according to a former housekeeper

The festive season means family and friends popping over, and when it's at short notice or you've been too busy that likely means you haven't had a chance to clean the house.

Thankfully, former housekeeper Vanesa Amaro is making things easy for us by revealing the four cleaning tasks we should do before guests arrive.

TikTok's queen of clean shared a video on the topic for Thanksgiving celebrations in the US, but her advice is also perfect for Christmas celebrations and could apply to any time people might be coming over.

The first thing Amaro recommends doing is going through your home and putting any item out of place back where it belongs.

Second is cleaning the toilets.

"It is one of the most important places in your house – this is where it really reflects if you are a clean person or a dirty person," she said.

Cleaning the toilet doesn't just mean adding toilet cleaner and swishing the brush though, it involves dusting the entire surface and wiping forgotten areas such as the base.

The third area you need to clean is the floors by vacuuming and mopping the house.

As for the fourth thing you need to do, it's a quick task that'll help remove bad smells from the kitchen.

"If you can't have a spotless kitchen because you're going to be cooking all day then make sure to at least take out the trash and put a clean trash bag on," she said.

Amaro's list of must-do chores before guests arrive is similar to MaidForYou director Delah Gomasi's list.

He previously told 9honey Living that if he only had 30 minutes to clean the house before people show up there are several things he'd try to get done.

"I'd focus my time and attention on vacuuming the floors, tidying any clutter, taking out any rubbish, making sure beds were made, cushions were fluffed and the toilet paper looked neat. [I'd also do] a quick wipe down of benches and our bathroom countertops to make sure there was no toothpaste residue," he said.

If you have longer to prepare, it's worth spending time on areas that people tend to notice.

"I can tell when I walk into a room how dusty it is, usually from the amount of sneezing I'll do as soon as I walk in," Gomasi said.

"One thing I always notice is corners of the floor, because they're difficult to mop and vacuum they're generally always really dirty.

"Floor rugs can be filthy because they're usually not moved to clean underneath, even though you can vacuum them that doesn't get rid of the dust and dirt that is found underneath them, this is especially true for heavy floor rugs."
