Plumber's go-to method for cleaning a dirty sink is also the cheapest

There are lots of products out there aimed at restoring grimy, dull sinks back to clean and shiny, but one plumber prefers a common pantry staple.

The experts at Plumbworld reccommend bicarb soda (also known as baking soda) for scrubbing your kitchen sink and bathroom basins.

They told the Daily Express that baking soda gets the job done in "minutes", while costing less than products specifically designed for the job with a 1kg pack just $3.50 at Coles.

"Baking soda is a natural, non-toxic cleaning agent that works wonders on everything from bathroom sinks to kitchen counters," they said.

"It's gentle on your sink's surface but tough of grime and stains, making it an ideal cleaning solution for a spotless, eco-friendly home."

Using baking soda to clean the sink is as simple as sprinkling it over the surface and then using a damp sponge, non-scratch scourer or cloth to scrub.

After scrubbing leave the baking soda and water mix to sit for a few minutes before rinsing off and then buffing with a dry cloth (this is essential for stainless steel kitchen sinks as it really makes it shine).

If you prefer a little extra cleaning boost you can add some dishwashing liquid to the baking soda and water, though it works effectively enough on its own especially with a bit of elbow grease.

While you're at the sink, you can also refresh the drain by sprinkling some over the drain hole and then running hot water down the drain.

This helps to remove odours lingering in the pipes, but to really get rid of a bad smell try scrubbing the drain hole with a bottle brush scrubbing brush.

The sink isn't the only part of the home you can clean with baking soda, in fact there is almost no end to all the things the bargain pantry staple can clean.

Staying in the kitchen, you can remove odours from bins and the fridge by popping a tablespoon or two in a small dish and putting that in or near the bin or at the back of a fridge shelf.

You can also clean the inside of the oven using a baking soda and water paste on the door and interior (but avoiding the fan and similar vents) and giving it a scrub.

It's also good in the laundry as a detergent booster and odour remover when added to the washing machine, and in the bathroom for scrubbing dirty grout.
