The laundry basket trick cleaner swears by for keeping her house clutter free

A former housekeeper has revealed the decluttering method she uses to keep her house clean and tidy.

Vanesa Amaro explained in a TikTok how she uses a laundry basket to remove excess clutter.

Each month the cleaning expert and her husband take a laundry basket each and collect items that fall into one of three categories.

"We just go around the house putting things inside the basket that we don't need, want or use anymore and we either throw them away, sell them, re-gift them – whatever it is –but they will be decluttered," she said.

To really make the process thorough and effective Amaro and her husband don't stop putting things into the basket until it's full.

"It has to be completely full," she said, adding that it can also be overflowing.

After the most recent laundry basket decluttering session was complete, Amaro showed how much stuff they collected.

In addition to the two full laundry baskets, there were two plastic bags full of clothes, and a bag of dog toys.

"Yeah we did pretty good," she said.

The decluttering method was a hit with Amaro's TikTok followers.

"Great idea, especially as we move into the holidays," a woman said.

"I do this and it works so well!!" commented one.

"This is a really good idea," another wrote.

However, one person did point out an issue not just with this method but with all decluttering efforts.

"Something I do!! but guilty of it currently just sitting in the hallway," they said and we can all admit to doing that at some point.

Others shared their own decluttering tips in the comments section.

'"I have started always having a box available where I can put items to declutter and there is always stuff to declutter. Whenever I empty the box, something new ends up in it the next day,' a woman said.

Another had a tip for how to get rid of the clutter collected, "Do you belong to your local Facebook Buy Nothing group? It's a great place to give (and receive!)."
