Aussie shoppers have been shocked by the appearance of the country's most popular veggie.

Some supermarket potatoes are sporting unslightly spots, leaving customers wondering if they are even safe to eat.

"Potatoes!?" one person said on Reddit's 'Coles' thread, sharing photos of their spuds. "2 different types of potatoes. 1 bag from Coles and another from a different supermarket. Absolutely disgusting.

"I am aware they're still safe to eat but they make me want to throw up and give me goosebumps. Is this going to be all Aussie potatoes now?!"

Another asked: "Why are Coles charging so much for a famine food?"

Potatoes have been experiencing supply and quality issues for months.

However, this latest issue is thought to be the tail end of the effects of earlier drought and extreme weather in growing regions in South Australia where 80 per cent of the country's crop is grown.

This has caused lower yields and the cosmetic damage customers are seeing, including the unsightly spots.

"If my potatoes looked like that, I'd lose my appetite instantly," one person commented on Reddit.

"That texture is… yikes."

The good news is these potatoes are perfectly safe to eat, or they wouldn't even be being sold.

To make them appear more appetising, peel them first, and you may need to peel them a little deeper to remove the spots.

"At Coles, we take pride in providing our customers with great quality and value everyday," a Coles spokesperson told nine.com.au.
