'It's time we all admit it: roast potatoes are overrated'
OPINION -- When Christmastime rolls around, it seems everyone can't stop talking about one dish they can't wait to eat.
Every. Single. Year. I hear people go on and on about how excited they are to pile up some roast potatoes on their Christmas lunch plate.
But I have a hot take to share – roast potatoes are so overrated.

When I've posed this concept before, I've been viciously attacked. So, before you come for me there's something important to clarify.
In no way am I implying roast potatoes suck – I have never and will never say such a thing. All I'm saying is that the way people put a roast spud on a pedestal is just a little... conformist, if you will.
I think there are very few people in the world who, when they actually sat down and had a good hard think about it, would say roasted is the best way to eat a potato.
It's like someone, someday, somewhere decided they liked roast potatoes. Then they went out and peddled it to the masses, spreading the word that roasted is the one and only way to enjoy a spud.
Then, for centuries, we've acted like sheep, just following the word of some random guy who decided he liked a potato with a crispy exterior and a nice fluffy inside.
Well, I say no more.
It's time we, as free-thinking individuals, actually take the time to think about what our favourite way to eat a potato is.
I want you all to close your eyes for a minute (maybe just one, though, because you'll need the other to read), try and get yourself into somewhat of a meditative state and block out all the noise of all those past who've tried to brainwash you to join the roast potato cult.

Now, imagine that for the rest of your life, you can only eat potatoes in one form.
Consider your options – some hot chips at a football game, a jacket spud overflowing with sour cream and bacon, a nice smooth mash with the perfect amount of butter and cream, a bag of salt and vinegar potato chips, or maybe even a creamy potato bake.
Now, open your eye and make your decision.
Are you keeping roast potatoes on the Christmas table? Or are you giving them up in favour of a delicious potato bake?

Thankfully, no one is forcing us to make such a heinous decision and we can in fact keep both on the menu.
All I ask is that people put some more thought into their potato preferences. If you truly do believe a roast potato is the best way to go about cooking a spud, that's fine.
But I'm willing to bet that when you put some thought into it and consider all the other options, most people will be able to undo the brainwashing and join me in my pursuit to help Aussies realise that, sure, roast potatoes are good – but they're so overrated.
