'I love Percy Pigs but I'm not happy they've landed in Australia'

OPINION -- Percy Pigs have officially made it Down Under much to the delight of British expats and anglophile Aussies alike.

But I, a passionate fan of the British lolly, am not stoked by the news.

In fact, I think the pink pig-faced sweets should remain firmly in the UK – worlds away from our Aussie supermarket shelves (please don't come for me).

Of course, when the news first broke – because, yes, Percy Pigs making their Aussie debut definitely fits into the breaking news category – I was initially thrilled.

That delicious fruity treat is one of the great joys in my life.

But it didn't take long for the realisation to dawn on me that it's actually not good news at all.

And no, it's not because I don't like the popular British lollies. Instead, it's BECAUSE I love them so much that I want them to stay off our shores.

You see, the magic that comes with enjoying a Percy Pig in Australia is borne out of just how difficult it is to get your hands on one.

Until now, it took asking a friend to fill up their suitcase on a visit to the UK and lug the little pigs on the 24-hour journey back to Australia to enjoy the berry-flavoured lollies – usually competing with several other friends with the same request.

The amount you could get your hands on depended solely on how much suitcase space your UK-bound friend had. Then, once you got your delicious delivery, it was entirely up to your own willpower as to just how long it would last. 

It was a rare delicacy. That bag of pink pigs in your pantry was in finite supply and once it was gone, you'd have to wait for the next time you or a friend booked a flight back to the other side of the world. 

Of course, you could also buy them online from retailers like Britsuperstore or British Corner Shop, but that's beside the point.

I currently have a packet of Percy Pigs in a container in my pantry that I've been holding onto for months since my friend brought it back from her Europe trip.

I grab a lolly or two every now and then to enjoy and then pop the packet back on the top shelf to stop me from eating them all at once.

That's not to say I don't have a sweet tooth; I'd easily throw back a whole packet of sour straps or M&Ms without a second thought. 

But Percy Pigs are precious. They deserve to be savoured.

A friend of mine is set to travel to the UK for Christmas and I was already filled with excitement knowing she would be returning in the new year with a fresh supply. 

The excitement of an incoming Percy Pigs delivery felt like magic, like Christmas. 

That magic fades if they're available five minutes down the road at my local Coles and I know I can grab them at the same time I stock up on almond milk and toilet paper.

If I can buy them on the way home from work or write them down on my weekly grocery list, they're just not special anymore. They might as well be any old bag of supermarket lollies – still delicious, of course, but predictable, commonplace and, dare I say, a little boring.

Now, I promise I'm not a complete Percy Pigs grinch. I have already ducked down to the store to grab a bag of the pink lollies for myself (even though it was sold out in the first store I tried).

I am just disappointed because the longer the little pink pig faces sit in my local supermarket, the less magical they will become.

Just as Christmas and birthdays wouldn't feel special if they happened every day, Percy Pigs will stop feeling special if I'm munching on a handful every other day (although yes, I am starting to realise this may just be a self-control issue on my part).

Before we know it, they'll just be a plain old lolly like any other.
