Australia's best supermarket tinned tomatoes have been named.

Choice's panel of experts blind tasted tinned tomatoes from brands like Ardmona, Mutti, Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and more to find the best – and a well-known and much-loved brand has taken out the top spot.

Mutti Polpa Chopped Tomatoes Organic, sold at most major supermarkets, has been named the best tasting of them all, scoring an 80 per cent rating.

"Our experts praised it for its rich red colour, chunky texture, pleasant flavour, and good consistency," Mark Serrels, Choice Editorial Director, said.

Mutti was also the most expensive in Choice's product test, costing $2.95 for a 400g tin.

For those looking for a more affordable option, Coles Cucina Matese Diced tomatoes came in second with a rating of 75 per cent. They cost $1.40.

These impressed the experts with their "pleasant tomato aroma", with "a good balance of sweet and acidic taste, and a smooth consistency".

In third place was another Coles home brand.

Coles Italian Diced Tomatoes also scored a 75 per cent rating for their "juicy consistency, pleasant appearance", and the judges "thought it would be perfect for soups and chunky pasta sauces".

They cost $1.10 per 400g tin as part of Coles' Everyday Low Prices range.

In fourth place was Community Co Italian Diced Tomatoes, which are sold at IGA. They also scored a 75 per cent rating for their "fresh tomatoey smell" and their "bright red colour and yummy flavour".

"They noted it was more liquid than others, so may be best for soup dishes," Serrells explained.

Community Co Italian Diced Tomatoes cost $1.30 per 400g tin.

Carmelina Italian Diced tomatoes (formerly Annalisa brand) took out fifth place with a 74 per cent rating. Also sold at most supermarkets, these cost $1.50 for a 400g tin.

The tinned tomatoes that placed in spots one to five are all products of Italy.

In sixth spot was an Australian-produce brand, Woolworths Australian Diced Tomatoes. With a 73 per cent rating, they are priced at $1.30.

In seventh place, another product of Italy: Woolworths Macro Organic Diced Italian tomatoes. They cost $1.70 for a 400g tin and scored a 73 per cent rating.

Leggo's Australian Diced tomatoes came in at eighth place with a 71 per cent rating. These are Australian made and cost $1.80 and are sold at most supermarkets.

Next we have Mutti Polpa Finely Chopped tomatoes in the ninth spot, Val Verde Diced Italian tomatoes in 10th, Ardmona Diced tomatoes in 11th and Coles Australian Diced tomatoes in 12th.

Aldi's tinned tomatoes didn't make an appearance until 13th place for their Aldi Remano Italian Diced Tomatoes Organic, which scored a 69 per cent rating and cost $1.59 per 400g tin.

Coles Certified Organic Italian Diced tomatoes have taken out the 14th spot, then Woolworths Diced Italian tomatoes in 15th and Aldi Remano Italian Diced tomatoes in 16th.

The final two places on the list are Aldi Remano Australian Diced tomatoes at 17 and Black & Gold Chopped tomatoes at 18.

The most affordable brands on the list are Aldi Remano Italian Diced tomatoes and Black & Gold Chopped tomatoes, which came in at 16 and 18 respectively.

"Tinned tomatoes are a pantry staple that most home cooks will reach for at least once a week for a spaghetti bolognese, curries, or even homemade passata," Serrels said.
