Who'd like a free, delicious flame-grilled chook?

Oporto has announced it will be giving away 10,000 full-sized chickens on June 10 to mark Dia De Portugal, a national day celebrating Portuguese culture.

The fast-food chain will be handing out Portuguese flame-grilled chickens for free with no catch and no additional spending or silly stunts required – and customers are thrilled!

One customer said they are planning to "line up the night before", although the chickens won't be ready until 12pm so they are "fresh and hot and ready for lunch" according to Oporto CEO Therese Frangie.

There are some rules.

  • The first 50 customers at each of Oporto's 200 participating stores will be handed a free chook.
  • This offer excludes Oporto at the Entertainment Quarter, Canberra Centre, Melbourne Central (closed for refurbishment), Carindale, Highpoint, all airport locations, Griffith, and stores in South Australia.

  • Each participating Oporto store will have a minimum of 50 free chickens to give away. Stock levels may vary between locations.
  • The offer is available in-store only, excluding Drive-thru and online orders.
  • There is a limit of one chicken per customer per visit, while stocks last.

Oporto introduced Australian to Portuguese-style flame-grilled chicken back in 1986 when they opened their first store in North Bondi, Sydney.

"What has given it its popularity is our original chili sauce, which is iconic and unique to Oporto and made fresh using fresh ingredients," Frangie explains.

"It's made with garlic, fresh chili, ginger and that's basted onto our chickens."

Dia De Portugal is a celebration close to the hearts of more than 73,000 Aussies of Portuguese ancestry.

"I love to hear that people are so keen to get their hands on delicious Portuguese chicken and for those sleeping out, if you miss out on one of the free 50 chickens we have Bondi Burgers for $5," she adds.

Also on the day, Oporto will be selling its cult-favorite Bondi Burger for just $5. Again, some rules:

  • The $5 Bondi Burger offer excludes Melbourne Central (closed for refurbishment), Highpoint, all airport locations, Griffith, and stores in South Australia. $5 Bondi Burger.
  • Single Bondi Burgers only.
  • One per person.
  • Instore only, not available online or through delivery.

Alongside free chooks, Oporto will also be selling Bondi Burgers for $5. Oporto

"I like a thigh piece, dark thigh meat all the way," she says.

Of Oporto's free chook giveaway, Frangie says the company is encouraging Aussies to eat their chicken "the Portuguese way".

"Using their hands, pulling it apart and sucking it off the bones," she adds.
