Someone discovered a surprise menu item at Maccas during a late night run
A couple has made a surprise discovery during a late night run to their local Maccas.
The Queensland residents found out their nearest McDonald's outlet on the Gold Coast sells 2L bottles of milk via the drive thru.
The pair shared their discovery on their The McDonald Family Down Under social media accounts, along with the comment: "I can't believe this is actually a thing here."

McDonald's Australia responded in the Comments section: "We've got your back (and milk, too) 🤝"
The couple proudly displayed their 2L Norco Full Cream Milk which cost them $3.50.
"Did that say $3.50? That's cheaper than Coles," one of their followers wrote.
And that is true. The same milk would have set them back $4.50 at most supermarkets.
"Cheaper than supermarket milk, drive-through Maccas for milk from now on it is," another added.

"Look out Coles and Woolies," one person commented.
Another added: "Wow! I didn't know about this. Pretty cool."
When asked which Maccas outlet they were at, they responded: "Gold Coast."
Although one Gold Coast local said they hadn't been successful in their recent attempt to purchase milk.
"Is this only just back, 12 months a go when I tired I was told no," they reported.
"Tried the one in mascot NSW. They rejected me blatantly and said this video is a prank," another said.
I can confirm that not all McDonald's outlets sell milk, as some of the family's followers reported.
After being sent this video by my colleague Amy at 8pm on Sunday night I grabbed my teenager and we jumped in the car to test it out.

My local McDonald's is at Castle Hill and I warned my teenager what I was about to ask for at the drive thru and he was immediately pre-mortified, and his feelings were well founded because they do not sell milk there.
Me: "Do you sell 2L milks?"
Very younger worker: "Um, I don't think so ... I'll ask."
I assume they thought to ask as they likely had crates of milk at the store for use in McCafe.
Very young worker: "No, sorry, we don't sell that here."
Me: "Thank you, no worries. Can I please get a small chocolate sundae with extra topping down the bottom?"
My teenager was so embarrassed he refused to even start eating his sundae until we had returned home, but who said the life a child of an investigative reporter was easy.
I mentioned this turn of events to my partner Shamus and he recalled McDonald's at Bathurst selling milk.

Which made me wonder if this was just at select locations.
During COVID in 2020, multiple McDonald's outlets began selling grocery essentials such as milk, bread, and eggs, as customers navigated lockdowns and social distancing. I also heard some sold packets of English muffins.
This ended ended with the pandemic, aside from some locations in Qld, NSW, VIC, and the ACT. I can confirm Gold Coast, South Ripley, and Ripley Valley McDonald's outlets do and likely Bathurst.

I reached out to McDonald's for comment and they said via a spokesperson: "While many restaurants temporarily offered essential items during the COVID‑19 period, a small group of Macca's restaurants have sold milk as part of their regular offering for a number of years.
"Today, a handful of Macca's restaurants across the country continue to sell milk, offering a range that varies by location from full‑cream through to soy, almond, lactose‑free, oat and skim options."

Call me an ideas person, but this has all made me wonder if there is scope for a drive through grocery business that just sells the essentials.
It would save many families from trekking to their local shopping centre for just bread and milk and eggs, not to mention save on those extra delivery fees we cop when using fast grocery delivery services.
Not to mention the fact that ordering a single milk via a fast grocery delivery service is a terrible waste of money.

It would work particularly well if those groceries on offer at that drive through grocery business were a tad cheaper than in supermarkets.
For now, it may be worth checking if your local McDonald's sells milk, just to keep it up your sleeve in case you ever find yourself in urgent need of some.
