This can of corn is 17 years old. That didn't stop one man from making a salad with it
The skyrocketing cost of groceries has forced many Australians to get creative with their menus – and that's no different for one Swedish man.
Reddit user hugol0l decided to take advantage of what some would call a lucky find by making a salad with a 17-year-old can of corn.
Yes, you read that right. The tinned corn was 17 years old, but what's more surprising is what happened after he opened the can, and ate his vintage meal.

"Found an old can of corn from 2007 sitting in my grandmother's house when clearing it out," hugol0l shared on r/Damnthatsinteresting overnight.
"Turns out it's perfectly good! (probably due to not being acidic)."
In a series of photos, Reddit users were shown a can with a July 2007 best-before date, which he opened to reveal kernels of corn that appear fresh as a daisy.
He then made a salad using the corn kernels, and hours after he ate it, he said his stomach was "fine".
It had a "slightly mushier texture from almost becoming an adult on the shelves," he wrote, "but other than that it tasted like something bought today."
Putting it in perspective, hugol0l said the film Ratatouille was released in 2007, and so was the iPhone.

The top three songs of the year, he highlighted, were Fergie's Big Girls Don't Cry, Rihanna's Umbrella, and Plain White T's Hey There Delilah.
Reddit users were having a field day, with one commenting: "People say canned food is ideal for apocalyptic scenarios. They should last for decades. So you'll be fine."
"You can eat anything once," another joked.

Food Standards Australia and New Zealand generally say that food should not be bought or consumed after its use-by date, but best-before is on a case-by-case basis.
The United States Department of Agriculture says for canned corn specifically, it's usually safe to eat, if it's been stored in the pantry, for two to five years from the date of purchase.
It's generally understood that canned goods can be eaten past the sell-by date as long as the can isn't damaged, though it's encouraged by health professionals to use your judgement after ensuring the food looks and smells as you would expect it to.
