Pre-portioned packaged snacks are just so darn convenient.
I confess to purchasing them often, in the form of Arnott's Shapes, the In a Biskit range, potato chips and even almonds for my daughter to bring to school.
Pre-portioned packaged snacks result in more packaging and therefore more rubbish. But today, let's focus on the cost.

This week, I spotted some of my favourite snacks on sale at Aldi ahead of school returning and wondered if their lower prices might challenge that belief.
I found Arnott's Shapes in Barbeque, Chicken Crimpy and Pizza flavours, as well as my favourite In A Biskit in Drumstix flavour.
They were all being sold in pre-portioned value packs and were seemingly on sale at the front of the store for $4.29 for a pack of 15.

So, I decided to stack up the options, comparing the per-gram prices. 9honey/Aldi
In A Biskit were on sale for $2.99 for a share pack or $3.99 for a pre-portioned package of eight.
I compared the cost of these with share packs at Coles and Woolies, and here are the results.
The easiest way to compare prices is to go to the prices per gram.
Whichever is the most affordable per gram is the cheapest overall and the one to go with, whether they are pre-portioned packs or not. Information on per gram price is readily available on supermarket sales tags.
Aldi's sales tag for Shapes shows the share pack costs $1.14 per 100 grams and the pre-portioned packages are $1.72 per 100 grams, so it looks like you are packaging them yourselves or popping them into reusable containers and lunch boxes.

Coles is selling Arnott's Shapes share packs for $3.00 for which breaks down to $1.71 per 100 grams and the pre-portioned packages cost $1.75 per 100 grams so once again, it's more affordable to package them up yourself, just.
Woolworths has their Arnott's Shapes priced much lower than Coles at $2.00 which works out to be $1.14 per 100 grams, and their pre-portioned packages of Arnott's Shapes are $1.75 per 100 grams.
RESULT: Overall, at all three retailers, it costs less to package up Arnott's Shapes yourself rather than purchase the pre-portioned packages. Aldi and Woolworths have price matched their share packs and come out the cheapest.
Now for In A Biskit.

At Aldi, share packs are on sale for $2.99 which works out to be $1.87 per 100 grams. Pre-portioned packs are $3.99 which leaves customers paying $2.38 per 100 grams.
That's means you are once again packing them up yourselves to save.
At Coles they are on sale for $2.00 for a share pack, leaving customers paying $1.25 per 100 grams.
The pre-portioned packages are $3.50, which works out to be $2.08 per 100 grams, making it more affordable for customers to package them up themselves.
At Woolworths share packs of In A Biskit are not marked down at $4.00, which means customers pay $2.50 per 100 grams.
The pre-portioned packages are marked at Woolworths and cost $3.50, meaning customers pay $2.08 per 100 grams.
That means the only time it pays to buy the pre-portioned packages for the In A Biskit range is at Woolworths.
RESULT: Coles has the best price for In A Biskit share packs that you need to portion up yourselves, followed by Coles and then Woolworths.

Keep in mind, these products are marked down at all three stores for their back-to-school promotions so these price comparisons only work this week.
To save long-term, you do need to check them throughout the year.
