'Nowhere to be found': Popular bakery item goes missing from supermarkets

Finger buns are the epitome of comfort food, hitting the spot no matter what time of day it is – for many, there's just nothing like them.

Which is why we can understand one Aussie's total panic when she couldn't find any at her local supermarket this week, branding them "no where to be found".

"What has happened to Woolworths finger buns?" TikToker Chelsea asked in a recent video posted on her channel @chelsea.pixels.

"You know, the four packs of the pink and white icing with the rainbow sprinkles? They used to be front and centre of every Woolworths bakery section but now they are nowhere to be found," she continued.

Finger buns are not to sweet, not too rich. They are a perfect blend of bread and icing and can be eaten while we are busy and on the go.

"Has Woolworths stopped making them?" Chelsea continued.

"If they have, Woolworths please bring them back – they were the GOAT [greatest of all time] but also if they do still exist, where are they?

"I have been to so many Woolworths stores and I just can't find them anymore. I'm desperate for a finger bun, please.

It isn't known where in Australia Chelsea resides, but a recent finger bun audit by 9honey Kitchen in Sydney found they can indeed be hard to find.

The first Woolworths supermarket we visited in Baulkham Hills in Sydney didn't have any finger buns in stock.

However, this was later in the day when they may have sold out and it also appeared that bakery staff had finished up for the day.

The second Woolworths store we visited in Kellyville in Sydney did have plenty of finger buns in stock, however this visit was earlier in the day and the bakery department seemed well-staffed at the time.

Although Chelsea had it right when she said they were no longer "front and centre"; 9honey Kitchen found the finger buns at Woolworths were indeed on the lower parts of bakery shelves in the supermarkets we visited.

In more prominent place were their new finger bun-inspired filled buns, located in a special display at the front of the stores.

We found two varieties in Woolworths stores – iced fruitless finger buns with pink icing and coconut, and iced rainbow sprinkle finger buns, presumably with fruit.

These were both in a four pack and cost $5.50, working out to be approximately $1.30 each.

And we're with Chelsea – finger buns should be on the top shelves of bakery displays.

One TikToker who claimed to be a Woolworths employee said they still make finger buns in "pink icing, coconut and or sprinkles".

Another claiming to be a Woolworths bakery worker explained "we don't have enough bakers to make everything on a day-to-day basis" – which could explain Chelsea's difficulty in finding them.

Another also said there is "a huge baker shortage".

One person saying they also work for Woolies said they "only bake them a few days a week".

There were also several comments by Woolworths customers who had either found plenty of them or none at all.

Woolworths confirmed finger buns are still an important part of their range, and their new ice-filled finger buns are also proving popular.

Woolworths Product Developer for Bakery, Ben Nguyen, tells 9honey Kitchen: "We have all been there when you get a delicious finger bun and you are left wanting more of the iconic pink icing on top.

"Our Filled Buns solve this age-old problem in the most delicious way possible by adding a surprising amount of pink icing inside the bun, similar to what customers may have found with some of our limited edition hot cross buns."

For those still struggling to find finger buns at their local Woolies, 9honey Kitchen can confirm Coles is also stocking them in their bakery departments – and unlike Woolworths, Coles had theirs front and centre and on top of the bakery display.

However, by the time we visited Coles at Kellyville it was early afternoon and it appeared that the pink-iced variety had sold out.

Although we did find delicious-looking white-iced finger buns with coconut and white iced with sprinkles.

And these cost much less than those at Woolworths, selling for $3.50 for a pack of four, at 80 cents each.

If your local Woolworths and Coles stores sell out of finger buns, you can always head to Bakers Delight which features a range of finger buns and keeps them well stocked throughout the day.

Bakers Delight also have a delicious and unique variety on offer – white iced with cinnamon sugar sprinkled on top.

These are a superior finger bun according to my eldest child, and I tend to agree. Not that I get to try them very often because as mums of older children come to learn, they rarely leave anything for anyone else.

They are also the most expensive of the ones we found, at $2.30 each.

Suffice to say, finger buns are seemingly here to stay, thank goodness.
