People travel from all over Australia just to try these $8 fries

These might look like regular hot chips – but the fact, according to their creator, people travel from all across Australia just to try them speaks otherwise.

It's a special seasoning recipe you can only ever taste at May's Malaysian Hawker, which makes their own mie goreng seasoning blend to sprinkle over the crunchy fries.

It's salty, sweet, and a little bit barbecuey, and you can find them at Mr Alloo's Noodle Market for the duration of the 2024 Sydney Royal Easter Show, which is set to close on April 2.

Mie goreng is an Indonesian stir-fried noodle dish, traditionally made with thin yellow noodles with garlic, onion or shallots, either fried prawn, chicken, beef or sliced meatballs, chili, cabbages, tomatoes, an egg and other vegetables.

It's derived from chow mein, and is believed to have been introduced to Indonesia by Chinese immigrants.

It does, however, have its own unique taste, and that's largely boiled down to the mild sweetness from sweet soy sauce.

May's Malaysian Hawker brings that sweet element to their hot chips with their special flavouring, which puts a unique twist on the Aussie classic chicken salt.
