Kaia Gerber sparks double takes (and deja vu) on the red carpet

When a star emerges in a ‘naked dress’, that’s usually what dominates headlines – but in this instance, the garment was upstaged by the celebrity wearing it.

Kaia Gerber embraced the sheer trend this week when she wore a silver dress for the New York premiere of The Shards, a new series based on Bret Easton Ellis’ semi-autobiographical novel.

The model-turned-actress, 24, shimmered under the lights in the slinky Valentino design, which featured sheer tulle dotted with tiny sequins sitting beneath lattice-style diamond sequin embroidery.

The column-style gown also featured a square neckline and delicate spaghetti straps, with diamond earrings, a cocktail ring and silver shoes serving as the finishing touches.

Ever since she entered the spotlight as a teen model, Gerber has drawn comparisons to her mum, the iconic supermodel Cindy Crawford.

There’s no denying the resemblance between the pair, but this look has really taken things to the next level.

Between the bouncy blowout, the ’90s design of the gown and the smouldering eye makeup, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was a throwback shot of Crawford on the red carpet.

Despite repeatedly hearing how much she looks like her mum, Gerber initially “didn’t see [the similarity] at all”.

“Now I will look at a picture and have to take a moment before realising which one of us it is,” the Mother Mary star told Vogue in 2019.

Crawford shares her two children – Kaia and her brother Presley, also a model – with husband Rande Gerber, an American businessman.

As if Gerber’s resemblance to her mother isn’t enough to give people déjà vu, her latest on-screen project has another nostalgic twist.

Starring alongside her in The Shards is Homer Gere, the son of actor Richard Gere – who was married to Crawford from 1991 to 1995.

Gerber appears to be taking a minimalist approach to dressing for the show’s press tour.

So far, she’s embraced simple, elegant gown designs in bold colours including red and black.

For the New York premiere’s after party, she slipped into another slinky gown – this time a black number by Norma Kamali.
