Australia's most popular dog names of 2025 reveal an unexpected trend

Deciding on the perfect name for your pooch can often prove a contentious subject.

But in 2025, Australians have leaned into one particular trend that highlights the increasing importance we place on man's best friend.

Pet Insurance Australia (PIA) has just released the full list of the most popular dog names in the country this year – and according to the data, there's been a spike in the humanisation of our pups through one surprising trend.

Diverging from past dog-specific trends, Australians are now opting for softer, more human-like names for their beloved canines.

PIA's annual look into pet-naming data uncovered clear naming patterns, including strong trends driven by pop culture, nostalgia and Australia's growing inclination towards human pet names.

PIA spokesperson Nadia Crighton says these naming trends reflect the deep emotional connection Australians now share with their dogs.

"We're seeing a real shift toward soft, comforting and very human-style names," says Crighton.

Pop culture influence also remains strong across the board, with names like Nala, Simba, Coco and Archie boosted by movies, children's streaming shows and media personalities.

Crighton says there's been a notable rise in "soft names" for furry friends as well.

"Names ending in -ie, -y or -a are exploding in popularity," she notes.

This is part of a larger cultural shift, with Australians increasingly viewing their dogs as child-like members of the family.

"Names like Luna, Daisy, Teddy and Milo feel warm and affectionate, you could easily find them on a kindergarten roll. It shows just how loved our pets really are."

"Our pets are family, and their names reflect the joy, personality and love they bring into our homes," Crighton says.

Across the nation, 'Luna' remains top dog, while 'Teddy' leads as the most popular male dog name.
