Can dogs eat mango?

Mango is a favourite of many, especially in summer and at Christmas, so it makes sense that dog owners wonder if they can share the tasty fruit with their beloved pooches.

According to Noble Vet Clinic, yes, mangoes are OK for dogs to eat as they are non-toxic, are high in fibre and have lots of important vitamins and minerals.

There are some things to consider though when feeding your dog mango.

First, make sure you remove the pit as it can be a choking hazard for dogs.

You'll also need to peel the skin as it is hard for dogs to digest and chop the mango into small pieces to prevent them choking on it.

Another reason for cutting mango into pieces is so that you give them a controlled amount, as the fruit should be given as a treat rather than a full meal.

There are many reasons for this but an important one to keep in mind is that too much fruit can lead to stomach aches and diarrhea.

"When you have sliced the mango into small pieces, start feeding gradually," Noble Vet Clinic explains.

"Make sure your dog swallows it before giving it another piece. This allows you to control your dog's appetite and prevent overfeeding it. Feeding slowly also allows you to monitor your dog and check for any reactions it may have."

Allergies to mangos are considered rare but can happen, so before giving your dog some it is worth discussing with your vet.

When feeding dogs human foods in addition to their diet it's important to get portion sizes right to prevent them becoming overweight or obese as this can lead to health issues.

"Remember, treats and toppers count as part of your dog's daily intake and those extra calories can quickly add up," Dr Katrina Warren explains.

"Treats should only make up no more than 10 per cent of your dog's daily caloric intake and you should adjust meal size."
