Mum shares the insane text she got about buying a birthday gift for her daughter's friend: 'Getting out of control'

There are always plenty of politics around kids' birthday parties, but one mum has come across a particularly wild situation. 

Shay, who goes by @shay27xo on TikTok, explained that after RSVP-ing yes to a birthday party for her daughter's friend she got a very interesting text message from the mother in regards to a gift. 

"I don't know about you guys, but birthday parties are really getting out of control," she said in the video, which has been watched over 2 million times.

She did the right thing and confirmed her daughter would be attending, but days out from the party she got a text message about selecting a gift for the birthday girl. 

Shay said the mother explained they have a "strict rhetoric" when it comes to gifts that they would like the parents to follow. 

"It was like, 'No colours, it can't have a colour, it can't make noise, and it has to be waste-free'," she explained and gave the camera a stunned look. 

The gift also couldn't be anything plastic, or contain any plastic packaging, which is what Shay learnt 'waste-free' meant when she Googled it.

The message went on to suggest that if guests couldn't meet that kind of requirements for a gift, the best thing to give her daughter would be a handmade card. 

"Don't buy a card, because that will produce waste," Shay added with another stunned expression. 

"I'm like, 'OK, well, this is getting extreme'… Have you guys ever experienced this? I need to know.

"Because at that point I was like, we don't even want to go to this party. I don't want to make a mistake and be that one that broke the rule."

People got very fired up in the comments, with a few very different opinions on whether being this specific is OK.

"Is the mom Kourtney Kardashian?" joked one commenter. 

Others came up with some gift ideas to meet the brief, including a sourdough starter, a kitten, a beige bath towel or a chunk of wood from a hardware store. 

Another person replied, "Demanding a specific gift rule is INSANE".

Someone pointed out that giving this info out just days before the party is unfair for those attending.

But some parents pointed out that it sounded like the woman just wants Montessori specific toys for her kid, and Shay confirmed their girls do go to a Montessori school together, which makes sense. 

One woman suggested this might be a round-about way of just getting money: "That's an interesting way of asking for cash gifts lol." 

"At that point the mom just needs to say 'no gifts please'," added another person.
