The most mispronounced name in the world is an Irish one - but it'll surprise you

There are plenty of names you'd be forgiven for having to think twice about how to pronounce. 

Then there are names that leave many scratching their heads, like Saoirse, Caoimhe and Niamh, for example.

But believe it or not, they're not considered the most mispronounced names in the world. 

Surprisingly, the name at the top of the list is one that seems like a no-brainer: Sean.

Yep, Sean. 

WordFinderX set out to find what the most mispronounced names are across the globe and went through Nameberry to pull a list of 12,786 names and their origins.

Then using Forvo, a website that helps people learn how to pronounce words with playable audio clips, they searched for names.

The data found the name Sean is the most searched, and was entered into the site a million times, making it the most requested name. 

The next most listened to name was Xuxa, pronounced "Shoo-shuh", which was searched 802,000 times.

Another surprising one was Victoria, which came in at third place with 696,000 listens.

Coming in at the fourth most searched for name was Francisco with 635,000 listens and rounding out the top five was the Greek name Plato, which was listened to 617,000 times.

The data dived further into names and turns out the most mispronounced English name is Anne, which had 343,000 listens.

While this might seem confusing, the pronunciation varies across the world, from 'Ann' to most English speakers, to European countries like Finland and in the Netherlands, where it's pronounced closer to 'Ann-uh'.

But, if it seems like too much of a hassle to start searching for pronunciations, or you're just not sure what to do – just ask the person.

And a bit of advice for any soon-to-be parents, you might want to think twice about a name for your kid that will lead to a lifetime of telling people how to say it.
