It is widely agreed it is harder to choose a name for a baby boy than a girl.

The annual Baby Names Report compiled by McCrindle Research consistently shows the most popular boys names in Australia are more widely used than the most popular girls names, which suggests there is a smaller pool to choose from.

But while a well-known baby name expert said this week there was no doubt "boy names are harder than girls names" to choose, she said parents-to-be wanting to go back to the classics could draw from her list of 24 favourite boys' names.

She has a large following on TikTok and Instagram, and is often called upon to discuss the latest baby name trends.

Slagen recently predicted a new trend for boys in 2025, which she calls "my best friend's dad's name", and said a number of 'outdated' girls' names were about to make a comeback. She also put together a list of her all-time "good, old-fashioned classics" for girls.

In a video she uploaded this week, Slagen said when helping parents choose a boys' name, "What I always hear is, 'I want something classic but not too popular.'"

She surmised the classics stay popular "because people aren't as willing to get as crazy with boy names."

"They're wanting something that feels classic but less popular," she said, before revealing her all-time favourite classic boys' names, including some she dubbed "new classics" – as well as the nicknames she loves.

"Charles and Christopher. You can use the nicknames.

"Daniel and David. They still rank very high. I don't come across them that much.

"Edward is one that is not popular. Francis, I love for a boy. Isaac has always sounded kind of edgy to me."

She then revealed some of her favourite 'new classic' names for boys.

"Lucas, to me, is 'new classic'. Michael and Matthew/Mathew [are] classic. Maxwell is 'new classic'," she said.

''Noah and Peter. I think that would be really cute for brothers.

"Peter's a great option that's not overly popular. [And I] love the nickname Pete for a man ... 18 to 32.

"Thomas [and] William [have] so many nicknames," she said before revealing her final name on the list.

"One that I haven't heard [a lot] that even could work is... Zachary."
