'My best friend's dad's name': The new baby name trend set to take off in 2025

If you are searching for baby name inspiration for boys, look no further than the latest trend expected to take off next year.

US baby name consultant Colleen Slagen says a trend she likes to call "my best friend's dad's name" will be big for boys in 2025.

Slagen, who runs a business called Naming Bebe and has a large following on TikTok and Instagram, is often called upon to discuss the latest baby name trends.

Now she says old-fashioned boys' names, which she likes to call 'My best friend's dad's name,' will be the next big trend in 2025.

Various media outlets in the US and UK overnight quoted Slagen from a report she wrote in conjunction with UK maternity and babywear retailer JoJo Maman Bébé on the baby name trends to watch out for among Generation Beta, which are babies born between 2025 and 2039.

"The biggest trend I see for 2025 is what I call 'My Best Friend's Dad' names," she said, before rattling off a number of examples, including Scottie, Tommie, Markie, Mickey, and Billie.

She also predicted there would be a rise in "millennial names" such as Greg and Jeff for boys, and Tiffany, Caitlin and Courtney for girls.

Each year, Australia's states and territories release the names of every child born the previous year before McCrindle Research uses the data to find the top baby names and trends for its annual Baby Names Report.

In 2023, it found 'vintage' names, such as Arthur, Alfie, Edward, Felix and Vincent, were also back in fashion.

According to National Seniors Australia, the average age of a grandparent in Australia is 60, meaning grandfathers of babies born this year would have been born in 1964, on average.

The 10 most popular boys's names in Australia that year were David, Michael, Peter, Mark, John, Paul, Stephen, Robert, Craig and Anthony, while other notables among the top 100 were Andrew, Gregory, Wayne, Brett, Ian, Richard, Kevin, Darren, Warren, Stewart, Stuart, Darryl, Raymond, Gavin and Ronald.
