Royal name's stunning drop in popularity puts it among baby names at risk of going 'extinct'

BabyCenter in the US has released its list of baby names that have dropped in popularity in 2024, with one royal name experiencing a sharp decline.

Catherine, the name of the Princess of Wales, dropped an extraordinary 221 spots in 2024.

According to the US organisation's list, other royal names also experiencing a sharp decline in use include Anne, after Princess Anne, Phillip, after the late Prince Philip, Albert and Edward.

These names have each fallen more than 100 spots.

In 2024, boy names ending with "aden" started falling out of favour. This included Jaden, which moved from 62 on their baby name popularity list down to 162.

Trends from the '80s and '90s have also experienced sharp declines.

This includes the name Jamie for girls which was a consistent inclusion in the top 100 from 1974 until 1996.

Other millennial names for girls that have experienced a decline include Erin, Kelsey, Chelsea, Kendra and Alexis.

For boys, Taylor, which was a top 100 name from 1988 until 1997, fell 199 spots.

Some nicknames are also fading away, including Liv (short for Olivia), which has fallen 257 spots and Billy (short for William) down 167 spots.

Katie for girls and Danny and Andy for boys have also experienced a decline.

In Australia, the 2024 Baby Names Report by McCrindle Research found Connor had recorded the biggest drop in boys' names after falling 32 spots between 2022 and 2023, while for girls, Eden and Claire each fell 23 places.

Other boys names being used less in the Australian list include Charles, which fell 25 places, Remy, down 25 places, Vincent down 23 places, Leon, down 20 places and Harry, which has fallen by 17 places.

For girls, other names that have proved less popular include Gracie, which fell 17 places, Scarlett, down 16 places, Quinn, down 15 places and Addison, which fell 13 places.
