'What is this cycle of naming kids?': The 100-year rule influencing the most popular baby names right now
When it comes to baby names, trends come and go. But if you've been around young kids lately you may have noticed one thing – plenty have names you've heard before, but maybe not for some time.
It's something that has TikTok creator Manny Buckley very confused and questioning the adult-sounding monikers they have been hearing recently, like George, Agnes, Ira, Belinda and Clifford.
"What is this cycle of naming kids?" Buckley captioned the video, which has been watched over 135,000 times, and got a lot of people talking in the comments.

"We aren't naming babies. We're naming people," someone commented on the clip.
My daughter has what we lovingly call a 'little old lady name' and it's become so popular in our circle of friends, too.
I've come across many children recently with the names Audrey, Polly and Hazel and little boys with names like Morris, Franklin and Stanley.

Sure, they're names we traditionally associate with older generations, but there's an interesting reason why this trend has come around. And it's called the 100-year rule.
The theory is simple: it takes around 100 years for a name to fall off the radar and then come back into fashion and fresh enough to jump back up the charts.
By looking at names that were popular from 1925-1930, you can predict the monikers that may be on the rise once more.

Take the top 10 names in New South Wales and Victoria for 2024 and it's clear that some of the more old fashioned names have made a comeback. Names like Florence, Elsie, Maeve and Bonnie are shooting up the ranks in popularity, proving that parents are looking for the lesser-used names from a century ago.
So it should also come as no surprise that one of the big name trends predicted for boys in 2025 is 'My best friend's dad's name'.
Think: Andrew, Arthur, Graham and Walter – names you've probably heard more at the bowling club or the golf course than at pre-school and you've hit the mark.
