Ella Rayment-Ward

While Donald Trump took centre stage at his second inauguration, the eyes of the world were looking to see what the fashion of the day would hold.

The style worn by the women in Washington on Monday (Tuesday morning in Australia) was all about sophistication and refined elegance, with nods to high-end designers.

Here's a wrap up of some of the most memorable looks from the day and the hidden symbolism woven in the fabric that you wouldn't necessarily catch at first glance.

As her four years as First Lady comes to a close, Dr. Jill Biden opted for a special colour for Trump's inauguration ceremony that held an important message.

The First Lady stepped out in a Ralph Lauren coat and matching hand gloves all in a rich purple, which is notably the colour used to represent bipartisanship.

The colour holds significance with the US government transfer of power from four years with a Democratic president to Republican president-elect Trump.

Melania arrived in a navy wool coat and pencil skirt by Adam Lippes, which was hand-sewn in New York for the occasion.

She paired her inaugural look with a less common accessory choice, wearing a wide-brimmed boater-style hat from New York City milliner, Eric Javits.

To finish off her look with a modern twist, Melania wore a pair of black leather gloves.

Keeping with the First Lady Melania's look, Trump's daughters also opted for a subdued colour palette for their father's second inauguration.

First Daughter Ivanka Trump wore a belted green cashmere peplum jacket and skirt with a matching hat, designed by Dior Haute Couture.
