'Nobody saw this coming': Why Cody Simpson and Emma McKeon's breakup hits so hard

OPINION - Cody Simpson and Emma McKeon's split is one of the more devastating celebrity breakups we've seen.

The singer and the Olympic swimmer quietly split in late 2025 after four years together, and it's safe to say nobody saw this coming.

I had the pleasure of meeting both Simpson and McKeon when they came into the nine.com.au office for interviews and social media content late last year.

Although our content was focused on Simpson, McKeon came along to support him.

We showed the singer photos of his old outfits to see his reaction, and as we were filming, he asked us to pause between pictures so he could show them to McKeon.

As the pair laughed as they looked through the photos, I vividly remember thinking how considerate it was of him to ensure his partner felt included, even though she was there for moral support.

We asked McKeon if she wanted to be in the video, but she insisted on letting Simpson have his moment.

Seeing them together, they really looked like the real deal.

This experience in the nine.com.au office is just one example of how the pair supported one another in their careers.

Simpson often gushed about his gold medallist girlfriend; of course, McKeon is the most decorated Australian Olympian of all time.

He was clearly just happy to be in her orbit as he also aimed for Olympic glory in the pool.

Simpson – who qualified for the Australian Swimming Team in 2022 – sat poolside at her races, and McKeon sat in the audience during his return to the stage.

These two did everything 'right', but it still wasn't enough.

That is the devastating reality of life.

It's especially painful because we all watched Simpson grow up in the spotlight.

We saw him go from that little kid singing on YouTube to an Olympic hopeful.

We also had the pleasure of watching his relationship with McKeon unfold, from their Instagram hard-launch to their time as teammates swimming for Australia.

Of course, we've also seen McKeon win a record-breaking 14 Olympic medals, including six golds, three silvers and five bronze medals.

Seeing this couple come together felt like the Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce of Australia.

They were the blueprint of a loving, supportive and healthy relationship.

Of course, no one but the couple knows why they decided to split – but we're allowed to be upset about it.
