Why Upload on 9Now is the hilarious series you need to be watching

What happens when we die is one of life's great questions. But what if the answer was a world of talking therapy dogs and pay-walled coffee?

That is the premise of Upload, where you can live in your own idea of 'heaven' forever – as long as you can afford it.

The comedy-drama – which is rated an impressive 90 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes – follows Nathan Brown, played by Robbie Amell, a charismatic computer programmer who happens to also be dead.

However Nathan isn't your usual TV show dead guy. He's not a zombie or a ghost, but instead still himself in digital form. He still eats (kind of), sleeps (kind of) and lives just like you or me... just with added nuisances like an occasional software glitch, buffering and ad bots.

In the opening episode of Upload, which you can stream for free on 9Now, Nathan dies in a self-driving car crash. He is 'uploaded' to Lakeview, one of the world's most expensive digital afterlife packages owned by his wealthy girlfriend Ingrid (Allegra Edward).

The series takes place in 2033, where digital afterlives are big business. The technology means that even in death, you can enjoy all the luxury comforts of a resort. But only if you can pay for it.

It's like Black Mirror, if Black Mirror allowed for some light-hearted fun amongst its existential dread.

The series follows Nathan's adjustment to Lakeview with classic fish-out-of-water gags and confusion. He also grapples with feeling indebted to Ingrid, whose wealth is the only reason he's there, but whose overzealous nature is... well, a lot.

Like all Lakeview residents, he is assigned a customer service rep named Nora (Andy Allo). Nora's job is to make his transition from living breathing human to digital not-breathing human as smooth as possible – but of course, that's not going to happen, especially when they form an undeniable connection.

Upload is an endearing watch that will make you ponder ethics, technology and what happens when we die... but not without the worthwhile pay-off of humour.

After all, the series was created by The Office and Parks and Recreation co-creator Greg Daniels, so you can rest assured it is very funny.

There is plenty of laugh-out-loud ridiculousness in Lakeview's 'heaven', including a line-up of quirky characters, such as the resort's resident staff, an A.I guy whose lack of human experience results in hilarious faux pas.

And if the thought-provoking premise, satirical humour and romance aren't enough for you, what about the murder mystery to untangle?

No spoilers, but as the story goes on, it appears that Nathan's car crash maybe wasn't so accidental after all.

Yep, as soon as you press play on Upload, you'll be dying to know what happens next.
