The weirdest items available at KFC around the world

It's hard to think of a more quintessentially American food than KFC. Yet, Kentucky Fried Chicken has reached its greasy tendrils around the world, bringing the American dining experience with it.

But while a tourist looking for some familiar fast food will find it in KFC, there's plenty of variations to the menu all around the world.

Here's some of the strangest meals you can buy at international KFCs.

The Philippines

The most striking item on the menu in the Philippines is the Double Down Dog.

The item is a frankfurter filled with cheese, with a fillet of fried chicken functioning as a hot dog bun.

The advertisements do their utmost to make it look appealing.

In 2015, KFC Philippines launched the Chizza, which was a ham and pineapple pizza, only with a base of fried chicken instead of dough.

The novelty item proved so popular it was launched in Singapore as well.

China

KFC is the most popular fast food chain in China, getting the jump on McDonalds by opening their first store there in 1987.

Their success lies partly in their range. KFC in China has a much larger and more complex menu than in Australia or the US.

On the menu is a chicken and seaweed rice bowl, peach tea, congee (or rice porridge) and breakfast sushirittos, which are a blend of sushi and burritos.

They also serve what they call a dragon twister, a Peking Duck-style chicken wrapped in a thin pancake with cucumbers, spring onions and sweet bean sauce.

You can also order soup, curries with rice, and a shrimp burger, which included whole prawns packed into a breaded pattie.

Thailand

On the menu at Thailand's KFC is an item called a shrimp donut, which is prawn breaded in a ring-shape and deep fried.

Also available, egg tarts, tuna corn salad, two different options of spicy fish rice bowls or just a plate of plain rice.

Japan

In 2013, KFC Japan offered an item that sounds impossible to Western ears – deep-fried corn soup.

The limited edition item looked like a chicken nugget on the outside, but oozed corn soup when bitten into.

KFC is an institution in Japan, and has successfully marketed itself to become the destination on Christmas.

South Korea

KFC had a harder time settling down in Korea, thanks to a long, proud history of fried chicken in that country.

But that doesn't mean KFC has been timid with its menu offerings there.

The Ginger Double Down is a hash brown, two slices of cheese and bacon sandwiched between two fried chicken patties.

One Ginger Double Down has 95 percent of the recommended saturated fat intake and 97 percent of the recommended daily sodium intake.

You can wash it down with a hot chocolate, a café latte or a beer.

Saudi Arabia

Prawns play a big part in the KFC menu in the Kingdom of Saud. The Zinger Shrimp Supreme is a hefty serving of deep-fried prawns on a bun with lettuce and mayonnaise.

The Ramadan special also includes a box of ten Krispy Kreme donuts, as well as a bucket of rice.

India

There's a lot of vegetarian options on the menu in India, a country where 40 percent of households don't eat meat.

In addition to the typical KFC fare is the Veg Zinger, which is a fillet of vegetables topped with lettuce and eggless mayonnaise.

Rice bowls are the big difference between India and Australia, with chicken or deep-fried vegetable strips served on a bed of rice.

Russia

Fast food for breakfast is rarely the healthiest option, but in Russia KFC diners can order oatmeal.

Also popular are hot dogs, curd cakes, tangerine lemonade and beer.

Brazil

This has to be one of the strangest.

In Brazil KFC created a burger of chicken topped with creamed corn.

The creamed corn was made with Philadelphia cream cheese.

Also available is the sweet popcorn milkshake, which is how it sounds.

You can also order rice or beans as a side dish.
