1. The show almost had a different name
Originally, the iconic series was going to be called Miami Nice to reflect its Florida setting.
Producers quickly realised the title might suggest a crime drama rather than a comedy, leading them to land on The Golden Girls, a perfect nod to the vibrant, mature women at the heart of the show.
The catchy new name helped set the tone for what became a groundbreaking series about friendship, aging, and independence.
2. Betty White wasn't meant to be Rose
Betty White, beloved for her portrayal of sweet and naïve Rose Nylund, was initially considered for the role of the sharp-tongued Blanche.
Having already played a similar character on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, producers worried about typecasting and instead gave White the opportunity to shine as the lovably quirky Rose.

Despite playing the eldest character Sophia Petrillo, Estelle Getty was actually a year younger than her on-screen daughter Bea Arthur.

The transformation was so convincing that many fans were shocked to learn she was younger than her "daughter" in real life.
4. The origins of the beloved theme song
The beloved theme song, Thank You for Being a Friend, wasn't written specifically for the show. It was a pre-existing pop song written and performed by Andrew Gold in 1978.

Whenever all four women were in a scene, one would sit on a stool off to the side to avoid crowding the frame.
