'Wait, what!?': Marvel and Netflix stars' mistaken identity mix-up has fans questioning everything

Fans have been left "flabbergasted" after learning that Marvel star Shawn Ashmore is actually an identical twin.

For years many fans were under the impression that The Rookie actor also starred as Gil in the hit Netflix series Ginny & Georgia only to discover that is in fact his twin brother Aaron Ashmore.

Thousands made the shock revelation after a Marven Cinematic Universe fan site wished the brothers a happy 46th birthday on X.

"TWINS???!?!?!?" one perplexed X user wrote.

Their comment was followed by thousands more equally confused fans.

"You're telling me these are two different people!?" another said.

"Wait! Hold on!! There's two of erm?? That's wild, I think I just had a brain freeze … Since when has this guy been a twin???"

Heads continued to spin over the case of mistaken identity.

"I literally just found out that Gil (Aaron) has a twin. I thought he was on The Rookie and Ginny & Georgia.

"I have watched this guy in roles since childhood and I NEVER knew there were TWO of them!"

Others weren't convinced that Shawn and Aaron, who were born a minute apart, were in fact two separate people.

"Not for nothing but I've never seen them together in the same room," one posted.

Another wrote, "Are you sure there's two of them and not just one guy sneakily cashing two checks?"

Shawn is most well known for his role as a LA defence lawyer Wesley Evers on The Rookie since 2018. He has also played the role of Bobby Drake, aka Ice Man, in four X-Men movies from 2000 to 2014.

Twin brother Aaron is just as successful in his career and has taken over the small screen in series like Locke & Key, Smallville and Veronica Mars.

Most recently Aaron was cast in Netflix's Ginny & Georgia as Gil Timmins, the abusive ex of Georgia Miller and the father of Austin.

The twin brothers recently told Us Weekly how they settled their sibling rivalry early on in their acting careers.

"When we were doing commercials, they would call us back in after we both auditioned," Shawn told the outlet. "And [they] said, 'We love you guys both. And so it's fair, we're gonna flip a coin so that you guys can see it's not preferential treatment …'"

"That was a really good thing for us to learn that it wasn't like one person was getting chosen over the other. It was like, 'We like you both. We can only hire one. Let's flip a coin.'"
