An Indian man who vanished from his hometown 40 years ago has been reunited with his family thanks to a YouTube video.

Khomdram Gambhir Singh left his home in Imphal near the Myanmar border in 1978, when he was just 26.

His family heard nothing about him until this year, when they saw video of a destitute bearded man singing a Bollywood song on the streets of Mumbai, on the other side of the country.

The video has also been viewed 55,000 times on YouTube.

Singh had been a construction worker but took to begging after a series of accidents left him unable to work.

"I could not believe my eyes when one of my nephews showed me the video footage," his younger brother Khomdram Kulachandra told The Hindu.

"We had lost all hope of ever seeing him again."

He was tracked down with the help of police in Mumbai.
