Scientists find new mineral that’s from space

Scientists have discovered a new mineral in a meteorite in eastern Russia.

And they are sure it has never been found on our planet before.

Its name is actually “uakitite” – named after the Uakit region of Siberia where the meteorite was discovered two years ago by gold hunters.

The group mistook the mineral – which is a yellow rock – for a rare metal.

According to researchers, 98 percent of the Uakit meteorite is an iron alloy called kamacite – which so far has only ever been found in meteorites, Outer Places reports.

The remaining two percent is made up of minerals that form in space.

Looking at the rock under a microscope, scientists found tiny uakitite grains that are 25 times smaller than a grain of rice.

Scientists don’t know a lot more about this mysterious space rock as they were unable to obtain all physical and optical properties of the mineral because of its small size.
