The chilling revelation Jeffrey Dahmer made during an unearthed prison interview one year before his death

Jeffrey Dahmer is largely considered to be one of America's most terrifying serial killers, having murdered 17 boys and men between the years of 1978 and 1991.

In 1992, he was given 15 consecutive life sentences for his despicable crimes, which involved luring young men into his home before drugging and killing them. Many of his murders also involved necrophilia and cannibalism.

Dahmer was killed by a fellow inmate at Wisconsin's Columbia Correctional Institution in 1994, but a year prior to his death, the "Milwaukee Cannibal" opened up to journalist Nancy Glass about his murderous path and the thoughts which led him to offend.

During one scene in the two-part series, Dahmer made a chilling revelation about what would have happened had he never been arrested in 1991.

"If you were out on the street now, would you still be committing the crime?" Glass asked.

"Probably, if that hadn't have happened," he replied.

"There's no doubt I probably would be. I can't think of anything that would have stopped me."

He added that he believed he was was "better off [in prison] than I was out there, doing what I was doing."

Elsewhere in the interview, an emotionless Dahmer explained that he "always knew" his crimes were "wrong", before adding: "The first killing was not planned. I had fantasies about picking up a hitchhiker and having complete control and dominance."

But he disturbingly added that he wasn't repulsed following the crimes, finding it "almost addictive" and said it gave him "a surge of energy".

In another haunting moment, Dahmer even spoke of how he kept some of his victims' body parts.

"If I couldn't keep them with me whole, at least I could keep their skeletons," he admitted.

"I even went so far as planning on setting up an altar with the 10 different skulls and skeletons... as a sort of memorial, a point where I could collect my thoughts and feed my obsession."

When asked at the time if he still felt the urge to kill people, Dahmer said: "I wish I could say that it just left completely, but no, there are times when I still do have the old compulsions."

In 1992, Dahmer was convicted of 15 of the 16 murders he had committed in Wisconsin.

He was later sentenced to a 16th term of life imprisonment for the murder of 18-year-old Steven Hicks in Ohio in 1978 – his first victim.

The death penalty was not an option for him at the time, as Wisconsin had abolished capital punishment in 1853.

Dahmer, who was 34, was beaten to death in prison by fellow inmate Christopher Scarver in 1994, after serving just two years of his concurrent life sentences.
