Andy Lee teases shock political career pivot: 'Not ruling out Andy Lee for mayor'

Andy Lee has done a lot over his career, from TV to radio to opening a pub – but now he's considering throwing his hat in the political ring.

A political ring where the stakes were more 'parking concerns' than 'global affairs', sure, but a ring nonetheless!

In an episode of his Hamish & Andy podcast, Andy asked Hamish Blake if he'd ever considered running for Prime Minister, which really took his mate by surprise.

"It's like saying, have you ever thought about asking a doctor to transplant an elephant's trunk onto your face," Hamish laughed.

"It hasn't crossed my mind!"

It had crossed Andy's mind, however, and while he was not looking to take Albo's job there was another elected position he had given thought to: local council.

Even Hamish could see it.

"I'm not ruling out Andy Lee for mayor or council member at all in your career," he said.

In fact, Andy, who is currently renovating a a 150-year-old heritage home in Melbourne, already he had two policies he wanted to see implemented.

"First one, in public parks, especially multi-level carparks, it should be mandated that small cars have to park, leaving space at the front of the park, showing that their bum is at the back," he said.

This meant no one would ever be tricked into thinking there was a free parking spot by a small car – we're onboard with that!

"Use the park, just make sure your bum's exposed," he explained.

This second mandate would likely prove even more popular with voters:

"Parking officers aren't allowed to fine you if there's a spare spot in front of you and behind you."

Hamish, who admitted to always "playing the game" and risking a parking fine, was well and truly onboard.

"What is wrong with giving your parking officers a different machine that prints out nice notes and goes 'Hey mate, you did overstay, but there's not many [cars] around and after all, the fines are for increasing traffic flow so, it's not a big deal and enjoy your day!'" he agreed.

"Could have got you, but we didn't, you know? Wouldn't that put a spring in people's step?"

The next Victorian local elections may not be until 2028, but it's never too early to campaign.

And hey, Andy might have more free time to dedicate to solving his constituents parking-related concerns by then – his mammoth Ravenswood renovation project should be complete in three years!
