We're all taught that with grit and perserverance, we can make our dreams come true... however, most of us don't have the unusual dream of making the world's tallest hat.

Cue Hamish Blake and Andy Lee who did in fact have that dream.

After a months-long journey to design and engineer the six-metre-tall headpiece, as documented on their podcast, Hamish and Andy unveiled their hat and took the required 10-metre walk wearing it.

The pair faced many hurdles along the way to their ridiculous goal: from the exorbitant price of a hat made out of carbon fiber to a projected 15 to 20 kilogram weight.

While it wasn't going to be sanctioned by the good folks at Guinness World Records, they proceeded with a non-official record attempt on September 9... followed by an actual Guinness.

First came the dramatic unveiling of the giant hat behind a red curtain in a 10-metre launch tower:

Luckily, the finished project came in at a light 3.8kgs meaning no necks would be at risk on his bold quest.

Hamish was then selected to pilot the hat by pulling his name out of much smaller scale replica of it. How else?

However, there was a late stage curveball: his head was too big.

"It's a real Cinderella moment isn't it? I'm an ugly sister and it just doesn't fit," he joked.

But they pushed on and finally, it was time to walk.

Sort of.

Judging by the sounds of banging on their podcast and an hour of failed attempts, it didn't go well.

The hat required some late stage modifications, as creator Freddy from Top Stage Advanced Composites used an angle grinder to give the hat a more Hamish-sized circumference.

Then, after two hours and 23 attempts, it happened: success!

Thankfully in the end everyone came out unscathed: the hat, Hamish, Andy and even Hamish's neck.

All that was left to do was to celebrate their (unofficial) world record with a Guinness.

The comedy duo concocted the idea after Hamish made a comment in passing on the podcast months ago.

At the time, Hamish said: "Everyone has had a crack at a Guinness World Record, every single radio show in the world, and we've always viewed it – with all due respect to our brothers and sisters in radio – kind of easy, low-hanging fruit."
