Eva Amurri Martino has opened up about a devastating loss that made her hesitant to try for more children, following news she's expecting her second child with husband Kyle Martino.

The actor and daughter of Susan Sarandon revealed her heartbreak in an entry on her lifestyle blog, Happily Eva After.

The miscarriage followed the birth of her daughter, Marlowe Mae, in 2014, and Eva says the ensuing emotional trauma made her reconsider expanding their family.

"As I grieved the loss of my child, and what could have been, I was also paralysed by a fear that I would never again have a healthy child," she wrote

She added that the loss was unexpected, having followed a normal ultrasound.

"My miscarriage was so sudden, so unexpected. I had been in to my doctor’s office for a perfect, normal ultrasound just the day before…Then, our baby passed away inside me what must have been only a few hours later," she wrote.

But this story has a happy ending: Eva, 31, has announced she's expecting a baby boy! The latest addition to the Martino family is due around October.

"I was sick of living in fear, of having so many negative thoughts about my future, and having that fear affect the way I was living my life," Eva wrote.

"We decided to go into another pregnancy attempt with our hearts open and to hope always for the best."

She added that while learning of her latest pregnancy was scary at first, she cherishes the opportunity and is excited for the arrival of her baby boy later this year.

"What good was I doing myself to ignore and dismiss this pregnancy just because of some arbitrary timeline?" she wrote.

"In that moment, I decided to love again – completely."

Congratulations, Eva!
