Fifty years ago, Lorne Michaels walked into New York's Rockefeller Centre with a dream to do something no one had ever done before.
He created what was once simply titled Saturday Night but is now known to fans around the world as the iconic live sketch comedy hit Saturday Night Live.
This year, Michaels is celebrating the 50th anniversary of his hit show with months of smaller events and releases all leading up to tonight – SNL 50: The Anniversary Special.
The three-hour special edition episode is broadcast live on TV with a live audience which, tonight, is packed with some of Hollywood's biggest names.

Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost
SNL head writer Colin Jost was looking all loved up beside his A-lister wife, Scarlett Johansson.
It was a return to the scene of their romance for the couple, who have the show to thank for their marriage.
The pair met when Johansson appeared as host on the show back in 2006, however they didn't begin seeing each other until 2017 when she returned as special guest in the season's premiere.

Jackie Sandler and Adam Sandler
Adam Sandler returned to celebrate the very show he was fired from 30 years ago.
Sandler and his wife Jackie stepped out at the event hand-in-hand and seemed to be all smiles despite the actor's rough departure from the hit sketch show in 1995.
He joined SNL in 1990 as a writer before becoming a cast member in 1991.
He became known for character comedy and his musical skits, however was fired from the show after four years as a cast member.
Sandler says the reason behind him getting the chop was simply that the NBC executives didn't really like him – and they especially didn't like the antics he would get up to.
But, the incident didn't seem to hurt Sandler's career, with his hit film Billy Madison skyrocketing him to further fame just months after leaving the show.
The actor also maintained his relationship with the Lorne Michaels which is likely why he was invited back to perform one of his iconic musical sketches for the 50th anniversary.
Sandler whipped out his guitar mid-way through the three hour special to perform an original song about the past five decades of SNL, ending it all on the line, "50 years of the best times of our lives".

Drew Barrymore
Drew Barrymore was all smiles as she returned to the TV show where she made history in 1982.
Barrymore is the youngest ever star to appear as a host on SNL, taking on the gig when she was just seven years old.
She's since returned as host in 1999, 2006, 2007 and 2009.
