'You ruined the film': Ruby Rose hits out at Sydney Sweeney in scathing online spray over biopic flop

Ruby Rose has hit out online at actress Sydney Sweeney for her newest movie, about American boxer Christy Martin.

Christy tells the tale of a determined athlete who overcomes a number of challenges, including domestic violence and a murder attempt, to rise to the top of her game.

The boxer was once married to her former coach Jim Martin - which makes for the bulk of the film - but in the years following their split, Christy married fellow professional boxer Lisa Holewyne.

Australian actor Rose issued a scathing spray about Sweeney's performance in the film.

The 39-year-old seemingly slammed the straight actress for playing the gay character, before revealing she was once connected to the movie in its early stages.

"The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry," Rose wrote on social media platform Threads.

The former Batwoman performer didn't clarify if Cherry was Christy's character or another character that didn't make it into the final film.

"Everyone had experience with the core material," the Orange is the New Black actor continued.

"Most of us were actually gay. It's part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time.

"For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the 'people'. None of 'the people' want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us.

"You're a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better."

Sweeney, who came to prominence through roles in Euphoria and White Lotus, has long been considered an ally of the LGBTQI community but has not made any major political statements either way on that front.

She was recently revealed to be a registered Republican voter, which coupled with her American Eagle ad sparking eugenics outrage - for trying to use "jeans" and "genes" as a pun - the young star has become a polarising celebrity.

Following reactions to her criticisms, Rose later doubled down when boxing journalist David E Phillips said he "spoke to Martin herself, I can tell you she doesn't agree with your take".

"The cognitive dissonance would be very hard," Rose replied, before suggesting the gay community had abandoned the movie.

"But the truth is, no one who was supposed to see the film did. Or ever will. It disappeared, when it was once destined for a long term Call to Action campaign that could have changed lives. Whether Christy says that out loud is irrelevant."

For Sweeney, 28, the film has been dubbed both her best chance at an Oscar and her biggest box office flop.

The biopic by Australian director David Michôd, who co-wrote the film with his Aussie wife Mirrah Foulkes, had a less than ideal opening weekend in the US, pulling in just $1.3 million according to Box Office Mojo.

The criticism prompted Sweeney to speak out in defence of the movie.

"I am so deeply proud of this movie," Sweeney began in a post on Instagram.

"Proud of the film David made. Proud of the story we told. Proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin. This experience has been one of the greatest honours of my life.

"This film stands for survival, courage, and hope. Through our campaigns, we've helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence. We all signed on to this film with the belief that Christy's story could save lives."

Sweeney has not yet commented on Rose's criticism.
