Australian rock band Powderfinger have sparked reunion rumours after a series of cryptic clues appeared in major cities across the country.
Mysterious billboards have appeared in Sydney, Melbourne and the band’s hometown of Brisbane.
Are Powderfinger reuniting? Fans certainly hope so. Supplied
The ads show a digital cipher that highlights words related to the band’s history, including “ALBUMS: 7”, “TOURS: 35″ and “FESTIVALS: 12”.
It comes after the official Powderfinger Instagram began following an account called @thereturnoftheelectrichorseman.
That is undoubtedly a reference to (Return of) The Electric Horseman, the final track on the band’s 1996 album Double Allergic, which turned 30 years old last month.
That account has shared photos of the billboards, writing: “I see your signs on the street now. Do you?”
While the My Happiness musicians have not made an official announcement, fans are excited by the possibility of a reunion or new project.
“I’m going to be sick … I can’t handle the thought of this actually happening,” one reacted.
“Please let this be a cryptic clue to a reunion. Australia needs this!” said another.
“DON’T TEASE US,” a third wrote.
Powderfinger split after their final show in 2010.
Four of the band’s five members briefly reunited during a surprise set at Splendour in the Grass in 2017, and all five last reunited virtually during the pandemic for a charity concert in 2020.
In 2017, lead singer Bernard Fanning denied the band were getting back together.
“Doing that is completely different to making a record, or going on tour and also restarting something that we put to bed seven years ago,” he told Forte after their Splendour performance.
Excited fans are hoping these billboards mean he’s finally changed his mind.
