Sir Patrick Stewart celebrated a special career win in his final social media post, just two weeks before his death this week aged 86.

The legendary actor said he was delighted to learn his audiobook of Shakespeare’s sonnets had been submitted for Grammy consideration.

“I think the Bard would love a Grammy!” he joked.

He released an audio collection of all 154 of the playwright’s sonnets, titled Patrick Stewart Performs the Complete Sonnets of William Shakespeare, in April.

In his final videos to Instagram he reflected on his recordings, explaining that the idea came from his wife, Sunny Ozell, following the success of his viral “A Sonnet A Day” social media series during the pandemic.

To mark Shakespeare’s birthday on April 23, Stewart shared a video of himself performing lines from his “most favourite sonnet”, Sonnet 116.

Finally in May, he celebrated the anniversary of the publication of Shakespeare’s sonnets in 1609 by telling fans what he hoped they took away from his recordings.

“I hope it has brought pleasure and curiosity, but more than anything else, I want it to have communicated all the multiple features that love might have,” he said.

Whether Stewart will receive a posthumous nomination will be known in a matter of weeks, with Grammy nominations to be announced on November 16.

The clips were fans’ final look at the Star Trek legend, who made his final public appearances two years ago in 2024.

He last posed for photos at an event for the Netflix film The Piano Lesson in Los Angeles on October 19, 2024.

Stewart died at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday following a brief and private battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia, a statement on his Instagram page confirmed.

His loss has been mourned by a slew of stars, including his X-Men co-star Hugh Jackman, William Shatner, Josh Gad and Kim Cattrall.

Marvel Studios honoured the legendary actor with a rare photo of him in his upcoming role from Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to hit cinemas in December.
