All the questions and theories we have after watching the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday

Opinion: We finally have the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, and let’s just say we’re basically left with more questions than answers.

The two-minute and 36-second clip has sparked several fan theories about what the plot of Avengers: Doomsday involves. If Marvel set out to generate chatter about the movie, they’ve more than succeeded.

Why is Doctor Doom warning the Avengers?

Potentially the most exciting part of the trailer is our first major glimpse of Robert Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom, otherwise known as Doctor Doom.

In the comics, Doctor Doom is from Latveria, a fictional country in Eastern Europe, which explains the interesting accent Downey Jr. has put on.

“Something is coming. Something we may not be able to deter. Before this day is done, we shall be faced with an unthinkable decision,” we hear him say in the trailer.

But I have one question for Marvel – why is the villain issuing a warning? If he wants to wreak havoc, is the element of surprise not on his side?

This leaves us with a few theories.

The first is that Doctor Doom may initially rally the Avengers on his side to deal with an even bigger threat, only to turn on them when the perfect moment presents itself.

But the second, and my preferred theory, is that somewhere, Tony Stark is still alive and ready to help the Avengers.

Now, don’t ask me any questions about how this would work outside the fact that the Tony Stark who is still alive would, of course, be from another multiverse.

In terms of how that ties in with the Doctor Doom identity and that weird Latveria accent – I have no idea.

What I do know though is that the Russo brothers have assured us that there is good reason to bring Downey Jr. back as Doctor Doom, and what other reason would they have to pay for Downey Jr. again if it’s not a major twist in the story?

And if you’re going to try to argue with me that there’s no multiverse relation between Tony Stark and Doctor Doom in the comments, let me just remind you that the Russo brothers said, “We always look at it as our job to not tell you a story that you’ve heard before; we’re never translating directly from the comics.”

But also, Doctor Doom could just be a villain who likes a fair fight. Only time will tell.

Are the X-Men friend or foe?

It seems that Marvel is finally ready to make up for lost time and bring the X-Men into the mix.

The trailer shows the original 2000s X-Men are set to return to our screens with Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique – and we also got a glimpse of Channing Tatum as Gambit.

But that just leaves us asking one question... is Wolverine coming back too?

I’d love nothing more than to see another Aussie join the Avengers, and Hugh Jackman is the only actor to play Wolverine in the original films and the 2010s reboot.

But in saying that, it almost seems as if, for his own good, he’d be better off staying away. Because by the looks of things, it isn’t going to go too well for the X-Men.

While we would naturally hope that our favourite mutants would be fighting alongside the world’s strongest heroes, it doesn’t look like it’s going to play out that way.

Now we’re not speculating that the X-Men are going to team up with Doctor Doom; instead, we’re picturing a Captain America: Civil War-type situation with two sets of good guys fighting for what they believe to be the right decision.

As we expand into the multiverse, it’s very well possible that the X-Men and the Avengers are forced to fight to save their own realities.

Even Thor can’t take on Doom

While we have plenty of superheroes on the Avengers, we have only one god – and even he appears powerless against this new enemy.

In the trailer, we see Thor prepare for what should be a fatal blow, only for Doctor Doom to stop him with two fingers.

I’ll admit there’s not really anything to theorise here except to state the fact that the trailer proves that Doctor Doom will be the formidable villain we’ve all been expecting.

If we had thought Thanos was bad, it seems we’ve gone up a level.

Have we completely forgotten about Dr Doom’s beef with Reed Richards?

The Fantastic Four are in the trailer, sure, but they’re hardly in it as much as they should be.

Doctor Doom’s whole origin story is basically that he has major beef with Reed Richards (Mr Fantastic, AKA, Pedro Pascal).

And before you come me about my whole defence of “the Russo brother’s won’t follow the comics”, I think we can all agree that Doctor Doom’s entire origin story might be a difficult part to mess with.

Without giving too much away, they’re basically besties from university; some things go wrong, and Richards then becomes Doom’s arch-nemesis.

They’re widely considered to be two halves of the same soul, the two smartest beings on Earth who decide to use their intelligence for opposite reasons.

Spoiler alert for Fantastic Four: First Steps: In the end credits scene of the 2025 film, we even see Doctor Doom for the first time as he arrives at Richards’ home.

But, in the trailer, we hardly get hints of that origin story?

No theories here, just pure hope and manifestation that Marvel hasn’t let us down when it comes to one of the most iconic rivalries in comic book history.

Let’s talk about that crazy plot twist

Sure, we’d all heard the rumours, but it’s now confirmed that none other than Steve Rogers is returning to our screens.

Last time we saw Rogers was after he made the desperate decision to travel back in time to live a full life with his true love Peggy Carter, rather than returning to the current timeline and the life he’d come to know.

We later saw him as an old man, passing the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson – who we now know as the new Captain America.

Now, we find out he is still alive as he appears at the end of the trailer in civilian clothes, and in the words of Thor himself, we must reiterate, “It’s not possible”.

The theory is that in returning to the past, Rogers may have caused some issues with the multiverse and could actually be solely responsible for the arrival of Doctor Doom.

“But how did he end up in the current timeline?” I hear you ask.

Well, a little before we see Rogers in the trailer, we see Loki, twirling his TVA card seemingly to remind us of his all-important role at the Time Variance Authority.

And when you see his face, you might recognise those curtains in the background. If my memory is anything to go by, they seem to look suspiciously similar to the curtains you would find in the home of Peggy Carter and Steve Rogers.

So, does Loki go back to get Rogers? And does Rogers come back to help clean up a mess that he may have created?

Well, potentially. But if he does come back to fight, it’s not as Captain America, seeing as that job has now been taken on by Wilson.

Where is Spider-Man?

The main question everyone seems to be asking is where is Spider-Man?

He’s at the forefront of everyone’s minds as a fan-favourite superhero, but it’s important to remember that just because he’s not in the trailer, it doesn’t mean Peter Parker won’t be making an appearance in Avengers: Doomsday.

In fact, he’s just one of a long list of heavy hitters missing from the trailer. We’re also missing Doctor Strange, Hulk, Nightcrawler, Sentry, Beast, Deadpool and Wolverine, among plenty of others.

It’s also important to remember that we still have Spider-Man: Brand New Day set to hit theatres before Avengers: Doomsday, so it’s likely that Spidey and Hulk were left out of the trailer to avoid giving away any hints of what we can expect from the upcoming film.

And finally, what on Earth (or shall we say ‘what in the multiverse’) is Infinity Vision?

Marvel announces huge star lineup for Avengers: Doomsday

It pops up as a quick snippet right at the end of the trailer, but nothing is actually explained about what Infinity Vision actually is.

But, while it sounds fun and fancy, don’t get yourself too excited – there’s no new movie viewing technology to obsess over just yet.

It’s basically a certification that will be given to cinemas offering Premium Large Format. This means a screen at least 45 feet wide, immersive sound such as Dolby Atmos or 7.1, and projectors with brightness of at least 14 foot-Lamberts in 2D and 6 foot-Lamberts in 3D.

Since those words mean nothing to the large majority of us, it basically means cinemas offering a premium viewing experience will be given the Infinity Vision certification.
