Behind the spotlight and world-conquering tap routines of Lord of the Dance, Michael Flatley and Niamh O’Brien’s love story was forged in quiet devotion, extraordinary resilience and deep personal hardship.

While fans around the globe mourn the loss of Niamh O’Brien at age 52, those closest to the couple knew their nearly 20-year marriage was defined as much by its painful trials as its triumphs.

From a secret decade-long connection to battling life-threatening illness, Michael and Niamh survived odds that would have torn most high-profile couples apart.

In recent years, the couple faced their most painful hardship when Michael was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.

In January 2023, Michael’s team announced he had undergone surgery for the unspecified cancer.

It came 20 years after Michael was first treated for malignant melanoma on his face after an observant MTV viewer spotted a suspicious spot during an 2003 interview.

Throughout Michael’s sickness, Niamh remained his constant rock. He credited his wife for giving him the strength to keep going.

“I was haemorrhaging and convulsing on a hospital bed and I kept passing out. They couldn’t give me the painkillers necessary,” he told the Irish Independent in a 2025 interview.

“There were some wonderful nurses that were trying to help me, but they were invisible to me because of the pain, but I will never forget opening my eyes one of the times that I came to, and my wife was there.

“And my wife was smiling. Can you imagine the courage from my wife, to put on a smile in that position? The courage that took? That’s a sign from God that he had sent me that angel, and she had that strength. Women are so much stronger than men. They just are.”

In a devastating twist of fate, Michael is reported to be in remission – only for Niamh to pass away after fighting her own private illness.

Marriage loophole

Four months later, when Michael and Niamh set out to marry in October 2006, they faced a major hurdle under Catholic tradition.

Michael had been married once before to Polish makeup artist Beata Dzlaba from 1985 to 1997. Under traditional Catholic ruling, a previously married person cannot marry a second time under the church.

However, a loophole cleared the path for Michael and Niamh’s dream wedding at St Patrick’s Church in Fermoy, County Cork.

Because Michael’s first marriage to Beata was a civil ceremony rather than a religious Catholic sacrament, church authorities deemed the pair eligible for a traditional Catholic marriage.

Father Aidan Troy officiated the ceremony, a moment that Michael would later describe as one of happiest moment of his life along with the birth of their son Michael Saint James in 2007.
