Born on October 11, 1985, in New York City, Michelle Trachtenberg was the younger daughter of Jewish immigrant parents Michael and Lana Trachtenberg.
Her father had moved to the US from Germany while her mother had immigrated from Russia. Lana even taught her daughters Russian as children and Michelle could speak some of the language.
Michelle and her older sister Irene Trachtenberg went to school in Brooklyn before the family relocated to Sherman Oaks, California, where Michelle was enrolled at Notre Dame High School, a co-ed Catholic college.
Trachtenberg got her start in the entertainment industry when she was cast in a TV commercial for an American detergent brand at just three years old.
She continued booking commercials for the next few years, appearing in more than 100 ads before she ever made her acting debut.
It's a common story among Hollywood stars, as proven by this throwback catalogue photo showing Trachtenberg (bottom left) posing alongside Grey's Anatomy star Katherine Heigl (top right) when they were both just little girls.
In 1991, at age six, Trachtenberg made her acting debut with a small uncredited role in the second season of TV drama Law & Order, where she played the child victim of a crime.
Three years later she landed her first recurring credited roles as Lily Montgomery on the soap opera All My Children, and as Nona F. Mecklenberg in the Nickelodeon series The Adventures of Pete & Pete.
It was her first project with Nickelodeon, which took a keen interest in the budding child star and signed her on for several more films and TV series in the years that followed, including her first big hit.
Trachtenberg made her film debut in 1996 alongside Rosie O'Donnell in Harriet the Spy, one of the first major pictures Nickelodeon ever produced.
It was a gamble for the young actress, as she had to give up her role on The Adventures of Pete & Pete in the middle of its third season to film Harriet the Spy, but the move paid off.
It cemented Trachtenberg's status as a rising child star and helped her secure a few important connections in the American film industry, which would come in very handy over the next few years.
Years later, Trachtenberg still looked back on the film that started her Hollywood career fondly, posting regular throwbacks to social media.
In one where she reflected about the film's 1996 premiere, she wrote: "July 10th 1996 the world got to see my dream come true as my first movie came out in theaters.
"I truly love all of your comments about how #hts [Harriet the Spy] shaped your childhoods."
Her adult co-star O'Donnell loved working with Trachtenberg on the children's film with the rising star, telling reporters almost 30 years after the film released: "I loved her very much."
After proving her skills on the set of Harriet the Spy, Trachtenberg threw herself into acting and landed a gig acting in the short-lived TV series Meego.
Though the show didn't air for long, it earned the teen actress a Young Artist Award, her first award for acting.
She then starred in a string of movies including Inspector Gadget and A Father's Choice before landing the cult TV role that would help her transition from a child star to a prolific young actress.
In 2000, Trachtenberg snagged the role of Dawn Summers, younger sister to Sarah Michelle Gellar's Buffy Summers in the hit teen supernatural series Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
She would remain in the role for the TV show's full three-year run, making her mark on millions of young viewers and proving she could do much more than act in kids' movies.
Though the series was a turning point for Trachtenberg's acting career, helping her move up in the Hollywood world, there was a dark side to the show that didn't end up on TV screens.
Pictured here celebrating her 16th birthday on the set of Buffy The Vampire Slayer with Gellar, Trachtenberg was young and vulnerable while working on the series and has suggested she was exposed to inappropriate behaviour on set.
In 2021, former castmate Charisma Carpenter claimed that the show's creator Joss Whedon had created a toxic work environment on the set. Trachtenberg backed Carpenter's allegations.
"I am brave enough now as a 35 year old woman....To repost this," she wrote on Instagram alongside a post Gellar shared about the allegations.
"Because. This must. Be known. As a teenager. With his not appropriate behavior....very. Not. Appropriate. So now. People know. What Joss. Did."
Whedon denied the allegations.
After Buffy wrapped in 2003, Trachtenberg continued pursuing acting with a real focus on attracting a different type of role.
As she approached her 20s, the young star wanted to break away from the child star or "little sister" image she'd cultivated through her first decade in the industry and the role she took next helped her do just that.
