All the times Mary Steenburgen's son Charlie McDowell trolled her by pretending actress Andie MacDowell was his mother

Spare a thought for Academy Award-winning actress Mary Steenburgen.

For nine months, she carried son Charlie McDowell, now 37, only to be relentlessly trolled by him on all her special occasions.

Almost every Mother's Day and birthday since 2014, Charlie has publicly praised actress Andie MacDowell (a living legend to whom he is not related), 63, instead of Mary (a living legend who is his actual mum), 68.

Before we break down the sheer betrayal inflicted upon Mary, let's take a look at the main players of this family saga/heartbreak.

Firstly, who is Charlie McDowell?

He is the son of actors Mary Steenburgen, 68, and Malcolm McDowell, 78, who were married for 10 years from 1980 until 1990. Mary and Malcolm welcomed a daughter, Lily, in 1981 and Charlie came along two years later.

Charlie is a writer and director, best known for directing the 2014 Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss thriller The One I Love. He recently announced his engagement to Emily in Paris actress Lily Collins (who is the daughter of English musician Phil Collins).

Who is Mary Steenburgen?

Must you ask? She's a queen and a legend best known for her roles in Back to the Future Part III, Philadelphia, What's Eating Gilbert Grape and TV shows like The Last Man on Earth and Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. After she split from Charlie's father, she married Cheers and The Good Place star Ted Danson, 73, and they've been living happily ever after.

What about Andie MacDowell? Who is she?

Andie, 63, is not Charlie's mother. She is best known for Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Green Card and Four Weddings and a Funeral, for which she received Golden Globe nominations. She has three children with her ex-husband Paul Qualley: Justin, born in 1986, Rainey, born in 1990, and Margaret (also an actress), born in 1994. None of these people are called Charlie.

Now that that's settled, let's take a look back at where it all began.

Charlie's birthday in 2014

On July 10, 2014, on Charlie's 31st birthday, he shared a photo of Andie on Instagram with the caption, "31 years ago this woman gave birth to me."

Mary wasn't impressed.

"WHAT AM I???? CHOPPED LIVER?? Let HER send you a damn birthday check," she commented.

Charlie promptly responded by congratulating her on her role in Andie's 1996 film Multiplicity.

Mary's birthday in 2017

On February 8, 2017, Mary's birthday, Charlie shared another photo of Andie, captioned "Happy birthday mom!!!"

"Clearly I have been working out," replied Mary.

That same day, Charlie posted a photo of Andie and her actual son, Justin, with the hashtags, "#neverforget #mymom #favoritechild #me #birthdaymom #multiplicity."

"Where was the friggin' perfect beautiful Andie MacDowell when Lumpster the hampster's cage needed changing?" asked Mary, rightfully miffed.

Andie's daughter, actress Margaret Qualley, happened upon the post, commenting with laughter.

Mary's birthday in 2018

A year later, Charlie shared a photo of the Multiplicity film poster, featuring Andie.

"Happy birthday, mom," he wrote in the caption. "You were great in Multiplicity."

"Thank you," was Mary's defeated response.

Meanwhile, Margaret commented, "Oh brother... Dual meaning."

Mary's birthday in 2019

It was the same story the following year.

"Sometimes I can't believe THIS is my mom," Charlie posted on Instagram, with a photo of his not-mum, Andie. Thoughtfully, he tagged Mary in the post who commented with "Yeah, never gets old."

Mother's Day 2019

In 2019, Charlie paid actual money for a cameo video from Real Housewives of New York star Sonja Morgan to wish Mary a Happy Mother's Day.

For the uninitiated, Cameo is a website where you can pay famous people to send you videos. The celebs usually just go off the information you've given them, and typically have no idea who they're talking to.

"Hi Mary, it's Sonia Morgan from the Real Housewives and Charlie tells me you're an amazing mom and that you've been taking acting classes and who knows maybe you'll win an Oscar one day, that's what he's telling me," the TV star says in the video, which Charlie posted on his Instagram Stories. "So he loves you very much and your husband Ted is a bartender and he always supports your dreams as well... Big kisses to you, Charlie and Ted."

Charlie then posted a photo of Andie, writing "Just kidding! Love you mom!"

Mary, exasperated, told him to get therapy.

Mary's birthday in 2020

For Mary's 67th birthday in 2020, she was so done with Charlie that she didn't even reply to his tribute post.

Andie made up for it though.

"Mama loves you my most favorite child of all," she commented.

A few weeks later

Not long after Mary's birthday, her husband Ted — Charlie's step-dad — got in on the joke.

He met up with Andie and they filmed a message for Charlie titled 'Mom'.

"Charlie you're the most special child of mine," she told him. "You're the only one that ever remembers my birthday. And the easiest birth. So easy I don't even remember it."

Mother's Day 2020

Charlie took things to a new level for Mother's Day in 2020, Facetiming with Andie before walking outside of his house to find a clueless Mary, yelling at her, "Who the heck are you?"

Charlie's engagement to Lily Collins

When Charlie proposed to his Emily in Paris actress girlfriend Lily Collins, Mary was proud as punch. Despite the years-long suffering caused by her son, she posted a cute photo of the couple on Instagram and said the family was "over the moon" about the engagement.

"As a mom, this is what you dream of for your children... to find a soulmate in life that gets you and wants you to be the best you can be," she wrote.

Charlie replied, "Finally you acknowledge me."

Mother's Day 2021

As if 2020 wasn't hard enough, Mary received this thoughtful message from Charlie for Mother's Day 2021.

"Happy Mother's Day to the greatest mom in the world! You make me stronger, taller, and even bring my hairline more forward! Is there anything you can't do!? Our relationship is about as real as it gets," Charlie captioned this photoshopped image of himself and Andie.

"Oh my gosh what joy," commented Andie, almost immediately.

"You have outdone yourself this year," said a probably depressed Mary. "I have no words."
